In one of their scarcely any joint public appearances, the crew of Apollo 11 spoke on the eve of the 40th anniversary of man’s first landing on the moon, but avoided nostalgia. They instead spoke about the future and the more distant past.

The level of fraud and error in the tax credits system has risen to 8.6%, figures released by the Treasury showed today.
Despite HM Revenue and Customs being set a target to cut the rate to 5% by 2011, a survey of 4,100 cases found it went up last year from 7.8%.
In a statement, Treasury Financial Secretary Stephen Timms said HMRC was taking action to reduce fraud and sin and "will use the analysis published today to purify its strategy further".

Two RAF crew members were being assessed in hospital today after a British fighter jet crashed during take-off in Afghanistan.
The Ministry of Defence said the GR4 Tornado was damaged at Kandahar Airfield, in the south of the country, at 7.20am local appropriated time (0250 GMT).
A spokeswoman said the injuries suffered by dint of. the crew – the only people on board – were still being assessed.

Mortgage lending rose to its highest level since December last month with a 17 per cent hike in advances, figures showed today.
A total of £12.3 billion was lent for the period of June thanks to a seasonal pick-up in house-buying activity, according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML).
Its latest statistics reveal that gross pledge lending stood at an estimated &pulverize;33.3 billion for the second quarter, although this was unaltered from the first three months of the year, which was the lowest quarterly reading since early 2001.

Gordon Brown was so angry about emails sent by his former adviser slurring senior Conservatives that he could not speak, Damian McBride said today.
The aide quit No 10 in April when it emerged that he had sent emails making false personal allegations about Conservatives, including party leader David Cameron, shadow chancellor George Osborne and his wife Frances and backbench MP Nadine Dorries.

A police helicopter was scrambled after a unsheathe the sword broke out when more than 100 people gatecrashed a party advertised in continuance the social networking website Facebook, officers said today.
