England coach Andy Flower has hit back at accusations of time-wasting from Australia captain Ricky Ponting.

Ponting was not happy by the England 12th piece and physio coming on to the stature late on as England’s tailenders battled to save the first Ashes Test.

"Ricky Ponting has got his own opinion, and I respect his notion. He is a surpassingly friendly cricketer and has been a very good ambassador for Australia," said Flower.

Holidaymakers seeking to travel around England next month will have to cope with more than 900 miles of roadworks on the motorway network, it emerged tonight.

More than 300 miles of motorway will be undergoing maintenance in the North West alone and 288 miles of the network in the West Midlands will also be affected.

In total, some 340 roadworks schemes are planned on the motorway network in England, transport minister Chris Mole told MPs.

A man today admitted a complex benefits scam in which he claimed more than £90,000 in his mother’s name.

Mohammed Abdur Rashid, 52, of Uplands, Swansea, South Wales, claimed an arrangement of benefits for his mother in the teeth of the fact she was living abroad long-term.

Rashid’s source, Mrs Tasbir Begun Latif, was living by relatives in India for periods of up to 11 months.

Sri Lanka needed only three days to beat Pakistan by seven wickets in the second Test and win the concatenation.

The visitors somehow not to be found nine wickets for 35 runs as they went from 285-1 to 320 totally out in their second innings.

Sri Lanka secured the 171 runs they needed in 32 overs in Colombo to clinch the series with one Test remaining.
