Croatia knocked the United States in a puzzle of the Davis Cup to extend to the semi-finals for the first duration since winning the rivalry in 2005.

Leading 2-1 overnight, Marin Cilic beat James Blake 6-3 6-3 4-6 6-2 in the reverse singles to clinch the victory.

Croatia will face the Czech Republic, who beat 2008 finalists Argentina 3-2.

Hibbert and Westbrook: Breakouts?

I calculated the efficiency numbers produced through players I was interested in who played in the brief 2009 Orlando Summer League.  The metric I used was Professor Berri’s Win Score.

I then ranked each of the selected players according to his production above or unbecoming the NBA average at the positions I anticipate he would play in the NBA.  Remember, these numbers do not take into account defense.

A Call for Help: Greg Ellis Wants out of Oakland

In a stunning interview with former Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin, ex-Cowboy Greg Ellis stated that mule defensive end DeMarcus Ware would attempt to put completely himself from ballgames just to obtain Ellis onto the field.

Ellis was released by the agency of the Cowboys earlier this season and subsequently picked up by the Raiders. Ellis still seems a little bitter through his disposal from “America ‘s team,” even going so far as to state that the team is not ready to gain a Super Bowl.

India’s leading alcohol tycoon has criticised the “political hypocrites” who control the country’s only dry state after more than 130 people died from drinking tainted home-made liquor.

In a broadside fronting Narendra Modi and his senior officials in the western state of Gujarat, Vijay Mallya uttered it was an open secret that alcohol was available in the state but at increased prices. Poor people were risking their lives in the same manner with a result.

Rubens Barrichello angrily accused his own Brawn GP team of costing him victory at the German Grand Prix.

The Brazilian led in the first part of the race and held the team responsible for him eventually finishing sixth.

"It was a good demonstrate from the team of how to lose a race," he said. "I did all I had to do, I was first to the first corner. They made me lose it."

Frenchman Pierrick Federigo produced a late split open to edge out Franco Pellizotti on halting-place nine of the Tour de France from Saint Gaudens to Tarbes.

The pair, who broke clear on the Col du Tourmalet, successfully held off the peloton’s attempts to reel them in.

Italy’s Pellizotti looked favourite for the win but Federigo came back late on for the assistant stage win of his career.

Dublin publican Charlie Chawke has emerged as being the man abaft a new syndicate interested in buying troubled Championship club Newcastle, the Irishman reported in a radio interview.

Chawke is working with colleagues to put together a group with the financial means to buy Newcastle, up for vent by owner Mike Ashley following relegation from the Barclays Premier League.
The Dubliner previously had an interest in Sunderland with the Drumaville syndicate, however he is no longer involved at the Stadium of Light after American Ellis Short completed his buy-out in May.

Mark Webber secured his unused Formula One victory and Australia’s first since 1981 when he led teammate Sebastian Vettel home in a triumphant one-two for the Red Bull team in the German Grand Prix.

Webber, in his 130th F1 lineage after eight years in the sport, started from his first pole position and overcame a drive-through mulct during the term of a first lap collision on his way to a spectacular win at the circuit in the Eifel mountains.

Seamer took a career-best 4-21 as Sri Lanka took early charge of the second cricket Test after bowling Pakistan disclosed as far as concerns a paltry 90.
