Peter Siddle was rewarded for his perseverance with sum of two units late wickets as he helped Australia regain momentum at the end of day one of the earliest Ashes Test against England.

England were 7-336 at stumps in Cardiff after Siddle – like all the members of Australia’s attack making his Ashes debut – had separate Andrew Flintoff for 37 and Matt Prior as antidote to 56.

An Italian lawmaker in Premier Silvio Berlusconi’s coalition has resigned after being filmed singing a racist chant about Naples and its residents.

Matteo Salvini, a member of the often xenophobic, anti-immigrant Northern League party, resigned his seat in the lower chamber of Parliament yesterday. He denied the decision was connected to the scandal.

In the video published by left-leaning daily La Repubblica, Salvini is shown at a plaintiff or defendant assemblage in June leading a profanity-filled chant frequently sung by boreal fans at soccer stadiums to denigrate rivals from Naples and other southern towns.
