Liverpool have snared Portsmouth and England defender Glen Johnson making the right-back one of the highest-paid defenders in the Barclays Premier League.

Johnson, 24, will earn a huge $200,000-a-week, after signing a deal worth $43 million over four years to move to Anfield.

The wage packet rocketed after Manchester City made a late dash to catch the defender from under Liverpool’s nose.

After Johnson had signalled he was happy to move to Merseyside last week, City boss Mark Hughes tried to hijack the mete out which forced Rafael Benitez to significantly increase the material terms.
