Liverpool ousted by Barnsley in FA Cup

LONDON – Seven-time champion Liverpool was eliminated from the FA Cup courtesy of a shocking 2-1 fifth-round loss to second-tier Barnsley on Saturday.

Brian Howard scored the winner in the 90th minute in front of Liverpool’s most fervent supporters at Anfield. Dirk Kuyt had put the Reds ahead, before Stephen Foster tied it for Barnsley, which is mid-table in the second-tier League Championship.

Liverpool’s season just took another body blow as Barnsley created history ousting the Reds in the FA Cup fifth round. The heroes for Barnsley were many.

Martin Devaney’s spectacular cross set up Steven Foster’s equalizer, Robert Kozluk’s scrambling legs kept a sure Dirk Kuyt goal out after the Barnsley defense was caught out of position, Luke Steele’s heroics in goal stopped Yossi Benayoun and Harry Kewell, and Brian Howard nailed the door shut with 30 seconds left as his 25 yard left footer beat Charles Itandje The match ended with Anfield engulfed by boos from LFC supporters.

Rafa Benitez’s comfort zone just got a lot smaller. For FA Cup junkies, another reminder that the tournament keeps throwing up some of the most memorable and entertaining matches.

Haley Prickett scored a career-high six goals and dished out two assists to lead the Bucknell women’s water polo team to a 14-5 win over Siena Saturday afternoon in its first game at the Princeton Invitational. The goal total was the most by a Bison player since 2006 and was one shy of the program record of seven.

Prickett’s eight points were just two shy of the program record of 10, held by both Aubrey Rowe and Julie McLaughlin.

After the Virginia Tech shootings in April, the Northern Illinois athletic department upgraded its emergency crisis plan, just in case.

“You hope you never have to use it,” athletic director Jim Phillips said.

Tragically, the plan was put into action Thursday afternoon after a 27-year-old man walked into Cole Hall and opened fire at 3:07 p.m., killing five students before taking his own life at the school’s DeKalb., Ill., campus.

Tahu’s silky skills set up a try in each half for Waratahs full-back Lachlan Turner, both with superb final passes, to provide the rare highlights in a lacklustre match.

LAS VEGAS – Senior pitcher Lauren Eckermann tossed a two-hitter as the No. 9 OU softball team beat Cal State Northridge Friday night, 5-1, in the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.

The Sooners moved to 6-2 on the year and improved to a perfect 2-0 in the tournament. Cal State Northridge fell to 1-5 overall. Oklahoma returns to tournament action on Saturday as it takes on South Carolina at 11 a.m. (CST) followed by a 1:15 p.m. contest against Illinois.

Henin survies day of upsets in Belgium

ANTWERP, Belgium – Top-ranked Justine Henin survived a day of upsets by beating Russian qualifier Alisa Kleybanova 6-4, 6-3 to reach the Diamond Games semifinals on Friday.

Henin will face Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky, who advanced when third-seeded Daniela Hantuchova retired because of a respiratory illness while Bacsinszky was leading 6-2, 4-6, 4-1.

Clinging to a 10-9 lead after the first five bouts, Bucknell rattled off five straight wins to roll to a 28-9 victory over East Stroudsburg in EIWA wrestling action on Friday evening in Davis Gym. With the win, the Bison move to 8-10-1 on the year and 3-3 in the EIWA, while the Warriors fall to 3-11, 2-4 in the EIWA.

To begin the night, sophomore Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area), who is currently ranked 19th nationally at 165 pounds, recorded his 50th career win. Rendos posted a 15-2 major decision over Joe Schick, his 10th of the season, to remain undefeated in EIWA matches at 6-0.
