Report: Selwood steps down in Oshawa

OHL

Despite making moves at the trade deadline, it appears the Oshawa Generals had one left.

According to newsdurhamregion.com, Brad Selwood has stepped down as head coach of the club and will focus all his energies on the general manager’s post.

Associate coach Chris DePiero will take over behind the bench.

"This is my decision as the coach," Selwood told the website. "It’s not health. It’s a gut feeling."

The Generals have clinched a playoff spot with a record of 33-13-2-4 and are currently in second place behind the Belleville Bulls in the East Division.

DePiero filled in recently while Selwood served a three-game suspension and the Generals went 2-0-0-1. Upon Selwood’s return on Sunday, the Windsor Spitfires thumped the Generals to the tune of 7-2.

"Chris was going to be the head coach in the summer anyway," Selwood told newsdurhamregion.com. "That’s why I brought him in here in the first place. I think he’s ready and with 16 games left to go, there’s something to be salvaged."

The move came as a shock to many of the players, who found out about it on Monday. But Selwood pointed the finger squarely at himself for the team’s struggles of late.

"I’m the first person I critique," Selwood told the website. "If my players are the first ones I critique, then I’m wrong."

The Generals return to action against the Kingston Frontenacs on Wednesday.
