OUTSPOKEN Gold Coast identity Craig Gore has waved goodbye to V8 Supercar racing by selling his two licences.
The licences for drivers Jason Bargwanna and Max Wilson have gone to undisclosed parties, but at least one is believed to have gone to Larry Perkins.
Gore, 41, has been searching for a long time for someone to buy the WPS Ford team which he started from scratch in 2004.
The development, just short of two weeks before the 2008 championship series kicks off in Adelaide, also raises questions about the future of Gore’s other motor racing interests.
His Team Australia Champ Car program which runs Queensland star Will Power is treading water, with the US-based open-wheel category facing a fight for survival.
Gore maintains that his flourishing business interests, which include property development and the Aussie Vineyards export wine empire, have forced his hand in retreating from the V8 Supercar scene.
The businessman, son of the late Sanctuary Cove developer Mike Gore, has also received warnings from his doctor about the possibility of further damage in the wake of a major inner-ear injury received during a helicopter mishap on the Gold Coast last October.
"It’s been an exciting journey and I would like to think that we did it our own way at WPS Racing over the past four seasons," Gore said.
"With my business interests absorbing more and more of my time and my doctor continually in my one good ear telling me how important it is to look after myself, I just cannot dedicate the time and effort."
But his WPS business will continue as the naming rights sponsor for the Chrysler Safety Car program in V8 Supercars.
Negotiations on the sale of the licences dragged out longer than Gore had expected.
His exit from the touring car series will be met with mixed feelings.
Gore has ruffled some feathers along the way after entering the sport with not a scrap of experience at the start of 2004 and with a hurriedly prepared team that was based near Helensvale.
The team’s best championship result was 14th place in 2006 with Bargwanna, the diminutive Melbourne driver who only recently admitted at being frustrated because of a lack of competitive equipment.
