South America to host Dakar Rally

Argentina and Chile will host the 2009 Dakar Rally after this year’s race was cancelled because of safety concerns.

The 2008 rally was called off in January after four French tourists were murdered in Mauritania on 24 December.

LONDON — The ATP will award rankings points to players who compete at the Beijing Olympics.

The awarding of points is not new, but it is seen as a way to ensure top players attend the games.

“The Olympic games remain an integral part of our sport’s great story and are a welcome addition to this year’s calendar,” ATP executive chairman Etienne de Villiers said Monday in a statement.

SYDNEY FC are weighing up both the future of high-priced Brazilian Juninho and the marquee player concept for next season after exiting the A-League finals series.

Juninho, who has had an injury-plagued season as the club’s marquee player, is now out of contract, and with his 35th birthday two weeks away appears at long odds to remain at Sydney.

Sydney FC chief executive George Perry said further discussions would be held with Juninho about his future in the wake of the club’s 2-0 loss to Queensland Roar on Friday night which knocked them out of the finals.

John McCain doesn’t have anything on Scott Hoch when it comes to straight talk. I’ve always liked Hoch. Some people think he’s a jerk, but I’ve always found his candor refreshing.

Hoch won the Allianz Championship on Sunday by birdieing five of the last eight holes, including the 17th and 18th. It was his second Champions Tour title.

Russia advances to Davis Cup quarters

LONDON – Russia took advantage of an ailing Novak Djokovic to reach the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup on Sunday, advancing to the next round along with Germany and Sweden.

The Russians, who lost to the United States in last year’s final, earned their decisive point in the 3-2 win over Serbia when Djokovic withdrew from the first reverse singles match despite leading Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 6-3, 4-6.
