Rivals.com, another service that has lavished USC’s past recruiting efforts with praise, has USC at No. 10. According to the people who rank high-school football talent, today’s group might be the Trojans’ least-exciting recruiting class in seven years.

One of the Beltway’s top prospects will take a major step up in competition next month. Undefeated Waynesboro, VA cruiserweight “JC Superstar” Juan Carlos Robles will battle “The All-American” Prizefighter” Rob Calloway in a 10-round contest on Saturday, March 15 in Allentown, PA.

Calloway will be the most experienced foe Robles (9-0, four KO’s) has faced and the first bout he has had since his April 28 six-round victory over James Johnson in Fisherville, VA. Calloway (67-7-1, 53 KO’s) has faced a number of former champions and top challengers as a heavyweight, including a 2004 bout against Hasim Rahman in 2004 in Glen Burnie, MD. But Calloway has resurrected his career since dropping back down from the heavyweight division, winning nine straight contests, including a fourth-round TKO over Galen Brown on October 6 in his adopted hometown of Saint Joseph, MO. That bout gave Calloway three major regional titles. No word if any of those titles will be on the line against Robles.

Its the final battle (of the regular season) between the Minnesota Wild and the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit is riding a 7-game winning streak, its 3rd winning streak of at least six games in length this season. The Wild are on a bit of a streak of their own, as they’ve won their last three games. Minnesota is hoping to make another statement that it can indeed win against the Western Conference’s elite teams. The Wild won during their last meeting against the 1st place Red Wings, can the State of Hockey have a repeat of that success tonight?

From the very start of this game, the Minnesota Wild demonstrated tremendous intensity as it flew all over the ice and quickly started racking up shots on Dominik Hasek.  Minnesota seemed to have channeled the tremendous effort it had against Columbus on Saturday as they played an up-tempo game with the quick passes that did not allow the Detroits’ defense to take away the Wild’s space.  Hasek stood tall early, allowing Detroit to weather the early Wild storm.  The Red Wings would try to get back into the game; and on a quick shot from the circle by Tomas Kopecky that Niklas Backstrom would stop but he was unable to corral in the rebound and Johan Franzen would stuff it into the net to give Detroit a 1-0 lead.  It really was Detroit’s first scoring chance of the game, but they were able to capitalize on it.  Minnesota would respond just about 2 minutes later, as it would again use its speed to draw a hooking call on the Red Wings’ Derek Meech.  On the power play, the Wild would use some tremendous puck movement before Mikko Koivu would find Brian Rolston open for a one-timer that he blistered by Hasek to tie the game at 1-1.  The Wild would continue its assault as the Red Wings seemed to be on their heels trying to keep Minnesota from taking a lead before the end of the first; but Detroit would skate into the 2nd feeling as if it had escaped with the game still knotted at one apiece.

– Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and Poppy Hills Golf Course, Pebble Beach, California – Phil Mickelson squashed talk of a career slump when he won last year’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am by five shots.

Mickelson and the field battled three days of bad weather, but clearer skies yielded even sunnier results for Lefty on Sunday when he closed with a six- under 66 for the first of four wins in the 2007 calendar year.

A number of schools will likely have to wait a little longer than anticipated to find out if they’re landing their quarterback of the future.

Jeannette (Pa.) High School quarterback Terrelle Pryor told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review late Tuesday night that he will not sign a national letter of intent on Wednesday.

“I’m 100 percent sure I’m not signing,” Pryor said, according to the newspaper. “It’s a tough decision and I’m still trying to decide between Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State.”

LESLEY Vainikolo is set to make his first Test start for England after being named in an injury-hit side for the Six Nations rugby union international against Italy in Rome.

The Tonga-born former New Zew Zealand rugby league international wing, who came off the bench during England’s shock 26-19 tournament-opening defeat against Wales at Twickenham, was one of five changes to the starting line-up announced by coach Brian Ashton.

Jonny Wilkinson, despite some predictions that a poor display against Wales might see him dropped, retained his place at fly-half as powerhouse prop Andrew Sheridan, who wrecked Australia’s scrum during England’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final win, became the latest addition to a growing injury list.
