England meet Switzerland for the 20th time at Wembley next Wednesday.

The eighth match in the series, played in Basle in 1963, produced a most unexpected scoreline…SWITZERLAND 1-8 ENGLAND!

A 36,000 crowd in the St Jakob Stadium saw Alf Ramsey’s team line up like this:-Ron Springett, Jimmy Armfield (captain), Ray Wilson, Tony Kay, Bobby Moore, Ron Flowers, Bryan Douglas, Jimmy Greaves, Johnny Byrne, Jimmy Melia and Bobby Charlton (left).

It was England’s third and final match of a European tour and we had already beaten Czechoslovakia 4-2 in Bratislava and East Germany 2-1 in Leipzig.

Switzerland were a decent side in the early 1960s and had qualified for the World Cup in Chile. A few weeks before they took on England they had drawn 1-1 with Holland.

Ramsey made seven changes from the team that had played in Leipzig. Charlton, on the left wing, was the only forward to keep his place.

The legendary Greaves is third in the all-time list of England scorers, notching 44 goals in 57 internationals, but he failed to find the net this time as the tourists ran riot. In fact, he was the only forward who didn’t score.

Charlton opened England’s account from Kay’s through-pass on 18 minutes. ‘Budgie’ Byrne added a second from a Charlton cross and Douglas scored from an acute angle to make it 3-1 at half-time. Bertschi, an inside-forward with La Chaux de Fonds, was the Swiss marksman.

The second half brought a succession of goals from Byrne, Charlton, Kay, Melia – and Charlton again with the last kick of the match.
