Agbonlahor survives England cut
Agbonlahor has been retained in the trimmed squad

Uncapped Gabriel Agbonlahor stayed in Fabio Capello’s first England squad for Wednesday’s friendly with Switzerland after the 30-man party became 23.

Striker Emile Heskey had to withdraw after earlier suffering a nerve problem in Wigan’s 1-0 win over West Ham and Ledley King is also unfit to feature.

In their final competition before the Patriot League championships, members of the Bucknell men’s and women’s swimming squads took part in the Navy Invitational this Saturday afternoon. The Bison swam alongside individuals from Navy, American, Lafayette and Virginia in the non-scored meet.

On the women’s side, sophomore Courtney Warren (Montour Falls, N.Y./Watkins Glen) posted the best finish by a member of the Orange and Blue on the day, placing third in the 200 back with a time of two minutes, 10.56 seconds. In the 100 free, she claimed ninth, clocking in at 54.88.

HARRY Kewell has been left out of the Australia squad for the World Cup qualifying opener against Qatar on Wednesday night.

Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek has confirmed Kewell will not be asked to fly back to Melbourne for the match, with Bristol City midfielder Nick Carle and German-based defender Michael Beauchamp also to be left in Europe.

Verbeek said all three players had made themselves available, but he felt they would not be needed.

Sabine Lisicki stuns Lindsay Davenport in Fed Cup
Teenager Sabine Lisicki stunned former world number one Lindsay Davenport 6-1 7-5 to give Germany a surprise 1-0 lead over the United States.

The 130th-ranked teenager produced one of the biggest upsets in the history of Fed Cup defeating the former Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open champion in straight sets. Previously, Davenport had won 25 of 27 singles matches in the team competition.

Well the big news of the weekend in baseball is that the Mets came to agreement on a long-term contract with star lefthander Johan Santana, thus finalizing their deal with the Minnesota Twins.

Santana and the Mets inked a $137.5 million, six-year contract on Friday evening, pending the results of Santana’s physical, completing the four for one deal which sent the Twins four top prospects.

The big story doing the rounds was Wenger’s admission that Arsenal was inches close to signing Cristiano Ronaldo before the Portugese midfielder decided to move to Old Trafford as his club Sporting Lisbon broke off Arsenal’s offer for a bigger bag of donuts from Sir Alex.

Wenger mentions that there is no better person than Ronaldo himself to give us the lowdown on what actually transpired. These tidbits are the stuff of biographical revelations. But there is a suggestion that Ronaldo would shockingly reveal himself a closet admirer of Arsenal soccer but stopped short from coming out with the threatened loss of his private parts at the hands of Sir Alex.

Cnd. women U20 soccer team draws UBC

VANCOUVER – The Canadian women’s under-20 soccer team earned a 1-1 draw with the University of British Columbia on Saturday in a tuneup for the upcoming CONCACAF championship.

Jodi-Ann Robinson of Richmond, B.C., a member of the 2007 World Cup team, scored in the 76th minute for Canada, which is seeking its fourth straight FIFA U-20 World Cup appearance. The top two teams in the CONCACAF tournament will qualify for next year’s World Cup in Chile.

GER: Leverkusen move into third place

BERLIN – Simon Rolfes scored twice Saturday to lead Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 over Energie Cottbus and continue its resurgence as the Bundesliga resumed after a six-week winter break.

The Germany midfielder scored in the 59th minute and then with a penalty kick in the 86th to lift Leverkusen into third place in the standings.
