Martin Kaymer has the European Tour buzzing. Could he be the next Bernhard Langer?

One thing is certain: the 23-year-old Kaymer is the youngest German golfer to ever win on the European Tour, surpassing Langer’s mark by 14 days.

Kaymer recorded a four-shot victory last week in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship against an impressive field that included Henrik Stenson, Padraig Harrington, Adam Scott, Lee Westwood, Luke Donald and Ian Poulter.

NEW YORK — Jose Canseco offered to keep Magglio Ordonez “clear” in his upcoming book if the Detroit Tigers outfielder invested in a movie project promoted by Canseco, The New York Times reported Wednesday night.

The newspaper cited “a person in baseball with knowledge of the situation” in a report on its Web site and said four people in baseball, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Major League Baseball referred the matter to the FBI.

Former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel remains under strong consideration to fill the Washington head coach vacancy, but a Redskins’ source said late Wednesday he has not yet been offered the position and that club officials might still decide to wait until after Super Bowl XLII to interview one or more assistants from the franchises involved in the championship game.

Team and league sources also insisted that Washington defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who was considered the heir apparent to Joe Gibbs and who has interviewed four times with owner Daniel Snyder and executive vice president Vinny Cerrato in the past 10 days, is still a candidate for the position.

Maria Sharapova into Australian Open final, too good for Jelena Jankovic
Former world number one Maria Sharapova of Russia wasn’t as perfect as against top seed Justine Henin, but she defeated Serbia's Jelena Jankovic 6-3 6-1 without much struggle.

From the start of the match up until the very end third-seeded Jankovic was weak and without solution to Sharapova’s aggressive play. Injured and with tears in her eyes Jankovic wasn't happy even when she made a perfect shot. She was disappointed and in the last game of the match she evidently gave up as she didn’t fight as in the matches that brought her to the semifinal.

Freshman Nick Calathes scored 21 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer during a late 13-2 run, in Florida’s 73-71 victory over South Carolina on Wednesday night.

The Gators (17-3, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) beat the Gamecocks for the fourth straight time, and send South Carolina coach Dave Odom off a loser in his first game since announcing his retirement after this season.

LIVERPOOL, England – Joe Cole scored midway through the second half to earn defending champion Chelsea a 1-0 victory over Everton on Wednesday, sending the Blues to the English League Cup final and giving them a chance to claim their third title in four years.

The England midfielder pounced in the 69th minute to ensure a 3-1 aggregate semifinal victory, and a Feb. 24 meeting with three-time winner Tottenham at Wembley.

Geoff Killing scored in overtime to lift the Belleville Bulls to a 5-4 victory over the Oshawa Generals Wednesday in the Ontario Hockey League.

With Belleville leading 4-3, Oshawa star John Tavares scored the equalizer with 10 seconds left in the game. It was Tavares’ 31st goal this season.

Adam Perry and Andrew Self led the Bulls with a goal and two assists each, while Nigel Williams and Matt Beleskey also counted markers in regulation.
