Undefeated junior welterweight Devon Alexander (14-0, 9 KOs) provided his own sound effects after landing every punch with an audible grunt in pounding out an impressive ten round unanimous decision over the veteran campaigner DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley (31-8-1, 17 KO’s).
Alexander (138 ½) repeatedly connected with stunning and rapid-fire combinations in hammering out the victory over the longtime southpaw contender Corley (138) from Washington DC. The talented 20-year-old lefthander Alexander St. Louis, Missouri continued to get off first and was the far busier fighter in landing stunning blows that eventually almost totally closed Corley’s left eye.
Hand speed, fast feet and movement were all part of the scenario along with enough loud grunts to make most tennis players at the Australian Open nod in appreciation of the younger fighter’s audible arsenal. Corley was valiant in defeat but after losing his last four in a row, including losses to Dairo Esalas, Jose Alfaro and Junior Whitter in a bid for the vacant WBC 140-pound ground, it may well be time for Corley to hang up on his gloves.
Judge Steve Weisfeld had it 118-109, while John McKaie scored the contest 116-111 and Don Trella tallied 118-109, all for Alexander despite the fact that he lost a point in the 12th for a low blow.
