Super Sunday on FSC has the trio of Andy Houlihan, Gary Richards, and Christian Miles. They discuss the Premiership, MLS, and the Serie matches at a studio done up as a pub. Richards makes it interesting with his anti- Arsenal comments and pungent criticism of Newcastle fans who have gone ga-ga over Keegan’s return. He also analyzes clips of the games and talks tactics. Houlihan is an unmitigated disaster and aside from one refrain “they need more players” adds very little, usually getting shunted aside by Richards. Miles is a glorified time-keeper. It can’t be mistaken for MOTD.
And please can we not have an “interview” conducted by Max Bretos. He is the Chris Matthews of the soccer broadcasting world, tone deaf, in love with his own voice, and not particularly insightful. The victims this time were Paul Caliguiri and his university soccer team, Cal Poly Pomona. We never got to know them as Bretos continued his backslapping fest and constant patter.
Man Utd fans will get a chance to follow the exploits of Manucho, their latest signing, in the Africa Cup of Nations. He has been the top scorer in the Angolan league the last two seasons and he will get to show his talent in the match against South Africa.
The news coming out of the Bafana Bafana camp is that first choice goalie Rowen Fernandez is injured and will be replaced by Moneeb Joseph. Apparently, Carlos Alberto Parriera is none too impressed by his players in their practice sessions and he is worried that their limitations will be exposed against a very physical Angolan side. Bryce Moon, the exciting new prospect in defence from Ajax Cape Town will make his debut.
2007 Buffalo Bulls Season Game-By-Game Recaps and More
Buffalo Bulls
Recap: It didn’t take a bowl game or even a .500 record for the Bulls to emerge as the surprise program of 2007 in the MAC. After winning no more than three games at any time this decade, Buffalo copped a school-record five league games, tying for the East Division lead, and dramatically shifting the culture around the program. A perennial punching bag for the rest of the conference, the Bulls expected to win games last fall, a credit to the job being done by head coach Turner Gill in just two short years.
Offensive Player of the Year: RB James Starks
Nigeria coach Berti Vogts said his team will qualify for the quarter-finals despite their 1-0 defeat by Ivory Coast in their opening Group B match.
“We have lost against the best team in Africa,” said the 61-year-old German.
PHILADELPHIA — Pacers forward Jermaine O’Neal called sitting out the season with a bruised left knee a “worst-case scenario” and refused to put a timetable on his return.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills defensive end Anthony Hargrove was suspended without pay for all of next season Monday by the NFL after violating the league’s substance abuse policy a third time.
The violation was Hargrove’s second since August, when he was suspended without pay for the first four games of the regular season.
This weeks edition of the High School Basketball Notebook focused on the holiday events. Derrick Favors was among the top performers, as he went off at the Pangos Dream Classic.
The Bucknell women’s tennis team is set to start the 2008 regular season on the road against Penn State, Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Bison are coming off an 8-16 overall record and 2-2 record in the Patriot League last season, advancing to the championship match in the league tournament for the third straight year.
The Bison return 11 letterwinners from last season: senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East), juniors Tiffany Card (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional), Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School), JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park High School) and Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), and sophomores Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), Eva Lipiec (Rockaway, N.Y./Poly Prep), Megan Lee (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield), Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown), Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima). Additionally, Bucknell welcomes three incoming freshmen to the 2007-08 squad, Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham), Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Pauls School For Girls) and Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor).
Looks like the Florida Gators and LSU Tigers are getting their rivalry off to a fast start this year.
The Times-Picayune reports that Patrick Johnson — the #2 defensive recruit in the country — has been held back from enrolling at LSU because of questions arising from his test scores. Johnson scored a 16 on his two previous attempts, but scored a 22 when he took the test in October.
Johnson contends that the Gators questioned his eligibility, which prompted the ACT to flag his previous test scores.
