In short, an inspirational figure. Will the good times roll in Newcastle?
Watching Kevin Keegan’s heroic visage on the Newcastle bench one could almost see him wear a bandanna, a muscle T shirt, cradling an Uzi in his arm getting ready for his Rambo remake as We will Rock You blares on the PA system. He is an inspirational figure. All square jaw. In a world of controlled messages, he is a throwback.
It was as if Keegan and Newcastle had spent a decade in the wilderness after parting company. Stints at Fulham and Manchester City, lifting them to the next level and initially promising, faded away. As England manager Keegan had the worst winning percentage. Newcastle briefly resuscitated themselves under Bobby Robson and then went through a number of managers. In psychiatric terms this is the equivalent of a fugue where a person wanders away from home only to return months or years later not knowing where he went or what he did in the intervening period of time. An amnesia rooted in a severe collective neurosis.

GLASGOW, Scotland – Jean-Claude Darcheville scored in the 89th minute to give Rangers a 1-0 win at Inverness Caledonian Thistle and a four-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League standings.
Darcheville scored with a low shot to give Rangers 50 points. Celtic, which beat Kilmarnock 1-0 on Saturday, is second with 46 points.
Former West Virginia offensive coordinator Calvin Magee has launched another salvo in the controversy that has followed coach Rich Rodriguez’s departure to Michigan.
According to Mike Brown, Magee’s agent, in a story published Sunday in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a WVU administrator told Magee that he would not be a candidate to replace Rodriguez and pointed to Magee’s black skin as explanation.
CENTRAL Coast Mariners have claimed their first A-League minor premiership – and a spot in the Asian Champions League – after a dramatic finale to the regular season.
Frontrunners for all but three rounds of the competition, the Mariners emerged victors in the four-way league title race after Queensland Roar imploded in Adelaide and Sydney FC let slip a winning advantage against the Melbourne Victory.
Four clubs began the final round tied on 31 points, but only Central Coast and Newcastle claimed wins, the Mariners pipping the Jets for the league title by just a single goal on goal difference.
Throughout the week, I’ve been saying that the debut of Brandywine, MD heavyweight Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell was one of the most anticipated pro debuts along the Beltway in some time.
Apparently, there were some outside the Beltway who were looking forward to Mitchell’s debut as well. One of those, long-time manager and legal counsel, Shelly Finkel was in attendance Friday night at the Pikesville Armory to watch Mitchell win a four-round unanimous decision over Mike Miller.
Finkel made no comment after the card, but did have a lengthy meeting with Mitchell prior to the bout. There is talk that Mitchell is very close to signing a promotional contract with Golden Boy Promotions.

Tynesiders Dunston Federation produced the performance of the round as they routed Hellenic League side Shrivenham with an incredible 8-0 victory at Federation Park, making their rivals’ long journey from Oxfordshire a painful experience.
Camberley Town’s fans were singing a merry tune, though, as their team saw off the Midlanders of Tipton Town 3-1 at Krooner Park, while the Cornishmen of Truro City got the better of the West Country derby as they edged past Devon neighbours Bideford Town 3-2 at Treyew Road.
Concord Rangers reached new heights with an impressive 4-1 victory over Shawbury United, following on the back of their 7-1 demolition of Newmarket Town in the Third Round.
