Undefeated Canadian super middleweight Jean Pascal (21-0, 14 KO’s) scored a commanding ten round unanimous decision over Omar Pittman (15-4-1, 8 KO’s), to continue his march to showdown with hard hitting Edison Miranda.
Pascal rocked and eventually dropped his opponent at the 2:35 mark of the 2nd, after nailing Pittman, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with three consecutive whip-like left hooks to the jaw. The last blast sent Pittman sprawling face forward to the deck and he ended halfway under the ropes but managed to regain his feet at the count of four.
Pascal (170 ¼) who now lives and fights out of Laval, Quebec, Canada but is originally from Port-au-Prince, Haiti dominated the early scoring with sharp left hands and ringing right crosses down the middle that nearly totally closed Pittman’s right eye by the end of the sixth round.
However, Pittman (171) rallied to rock the 25-year-old Pascal with 57-seconds to go in the 7th, with a hammering left hook to the jaw. The punch staggered the Canadian and Pascal almost looked like he was headed for the deck but managed to remain upright. Pascal was forced to clinch but with less than 20-seconds remaining in the round, he was jolted again by another clubbing left hook to the jaw. Pascal was nailed yet again early in the 8th, but he managed to survive Pittman’s attack and the Canadian put together two more solid rounds in the 9th and the 10th to win the fight going away.
Judge Don O’Neill had it 98-91, while Michael Pernick tallied 97-92 and Rocky Young scored the contest 98-91, all in favor of the victorious Haitian/Canadian. However, coming off his somewhat less than inspiring performance there still are a number of questions about Jean Pascal’s skill set and his ability to finish off a fighter that he has hurt.
Undercard: Heavyweight Kasim Howard (5-0, 4 KO’s) kept his perfect record intact by scoring a second round knockout over Ron LaForge (1-1, 1 KO). The 26-year-old Howard (213 ½) dropped LaForge (220 ½) early in the 2nd, with a volley of shots to the face and a right hand to the ribs. LaForge, Billings, Montana, managed to beat the count but he was still wobbly when the bout resumed. Howard, St. Augustine, Florida landed a late blow to the stomach despite instructions from the referee Frank Gentile to break, which did little to help LaForge’s cause. Moment’s later, Howard, 6’3″, landed another flurry of punches including a left hook to the chin that dropped LaForge, 5’9″, flat on his back and the referee Gentile counted out the reluctant boxer at the 1:52 mark.
