Eleni Daniilidou

Hobart, Australia (Sports Network) – Greece’s Eleni Daniilidou captured the title at the Moorilla International tennis tournament on Friday without even lifting her racquet on Day 6.

The 25-year-old Daniilidou was scheduled to meet Vera Zvonareva in the hardcourt finale, but the second-seeded Russian pulled out, citing a left ankle injury. The unseeded Daniilidou claimed the first-place check of $25,650 and her fifth career singles title.

Chris Guccione

Sydney, Australia (Sports Network) – Australian wild card Chris Guccione continued his wild ride to the final at the Medibank International tennis event on Friday.

Guccione, who sent sixth-seeded Lleyton Hewitt packing in the second round and downed fourth-seeded Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals, doused Czech Radek Stepanek 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Trevor Berbick

KINGSTON, Jamaica – A nephew of former heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick was sentenced Friday to life in prison for his murder.

Harold Berbick, 21, will be eligible for parole in 20 years. His accomplice, Kenton Gordon, was sentenced to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of manslaughter.

Police said the two beat Trevor Berbick to death in October 2006 and left the 54-year-old’s body in a church courtyard.

At long last it has happened, Denis Hamlett is the new coach of the Chicago Fire. After getting passed over multiple times for the post, Hamlett has to prove that even a forced hirer can turn out to be a good thing. Any first time manager is going to have a difficult task in front of them, but under these circumstances, he’s got a hard year ahead of him. I wish him nothing but the best of luck.

ATLANTA — While the chances of Pete Carroll even agreeing to meet with the Atlanta Falcons about their head coach vacancy remain a long shot at best, dialogue between the Southern California coach and team officials still was ongoing Thursday, league sources told ESPN.com.

In fact, on Thursday, Carroll was still in contact with coaches who likely would be assistants on his staff if he was offered and accepted the job here.

Isiah Thomas

NEW YORK – Isiah Thomas avoided an NBA suspension, even though the league said Thursday there was contact between the New York Knicks coach and the official who threw him out of a game.

The league ruled the contact wasn’t initiated by Thomas, but accidentally created by official Eric Lewis while he was ejecting Thomas from Wednesday night’s game against Houston.

BAYERN Munich named former German national coach Juergen Klinsmann as the club’s new manager for next season.

"Former Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann will take over on July 1, 2008," said a statement on the club’s website.

Although current manager Ottmar Hitzfeld had already announced he was leaving the club at the end of the current season, the appointment of 43-year-old Klinsmann is a surprise.
