MUNICH, Germany - Jose Mourinho would be a good choice to fill the vacant coaching job at Bayern Munich, Franz Beckenbauer said Friday.

But only if he learns German. The Bayern Munich president said the ideal replacement for Ottmar Hitzfeld - who will step down at the end of the season - would be experienced, a polished tactician and German-speaking.

LONDON - Wearing an Arsenal tracksuit with No. 23 on his chest, David Beckham joined the Gunners for training on Friday.

The Los Angeles Galaxy need not worry, however, as its star player has no plans to play competitively for Arsenal. He’s only at the club’s training headquarters to get in shape to play for England and for the March start of the new season for Major League Soccer.

OHL: Rangers acquire G Mason

The Kitchener Rangers have acquired goaltender Steve Mason from the London Knights in exchange for forward Phil Varone, defenceman Steve Tarasuk, a second, third and fourth round pick in 2011 and a second round selection in the 2012 OHL Draft.

Mason, 19, is the Canadian junior hockey team’s starting goaltender and is a third-round draft pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Canada and U.S. set for semifinal clash

For the second straight year, Canada is facing the United States in the semifinals of the world junior hockey championship in the Czech Republic. The game is currently scoreless in the first period.

Earlier today, Sweden beat Russia 2-1 in overtime in the first semifinal.  The winner of the Canada-USA showdown will thus face the Swedes in the gold medal game. Sweden beat Canada 4-3 in the preliminary round.

In what started from a tip from Ryan (thanks, Ryan!), Auburn DC Will Muschamp interviewed yesterday for the vacant DC position with the Texas Longhorns.

Last night, just after 1am, the Texas Rivals.com site - Orangebloods.com - reported that Mack Brown had closed the deal and Muchamp has been hired by Texas.

In other words, Texas has just served notice to the rest of the Big XII.

HONG KONG (AP) - Venus Williams beat China’s Peng Shuai 6-1, 6-2 Thursday in her first match of the year at the JB Group Classic exhibition tournament, a warmup for the Australian Open.

Peng, a powerful double-handed hitter on both sides, out-hit Williams occasionally but never posed a serious threat to the more consistent American.
