For many of us who hail from areas where hockey is a part of a tradition a near universal memory is the first time we played the game. For those of us from Canada, New England, Michigan, and of course the State of Hockey our first game was likely played outside, on a pond or on a local frozen sheet of ice. You put your skates on rushed out onto the partially snow covered ice and played out all of your hockey dreams. For perhaps a moment you pretended to be the hockey heroes you admired so much. You realized this was a moment that linked you to the greats of the game, because at some point the stars you admired started their hockey the same way.

It is this image of connecting to hockey’s roots that makes the Winter Classic so nostalgic. For anyone that is unfamiliar with this outdoor culture that are the roots of hockey it is a terrific chance to witness it for themselves. While some can question the NHL’s timing to put the Winter Classic up against the BCS College Football games on New Year’s Day, it is still a must for any hockey fan to watch. With 30+ bowl games, perhaps since it is something different perhaps TV viewers will tune in more than sports pundits may think.

Zvonareva, Kirilenko advance in Auckland

Auckland, New Zealand (Sports Network) – Top-seeded Russians Vera Zvonareva and Maria Kirilenko highlighted Tuesday’s opening-round winners at the $145,000 ASB Classic tennis tournament.

Zvonareva zipped past wild card Sacha Jones, of New Zealand, 6-0, 6-1, while Kirilenko outlasted Estonian Kaia Kanepi 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 on the hardcourts at ASB Tennis Centre. Zvonareva was last year’s runner-up here to Serbian Jelena Jankovic.

Hewitt advances at Aussie open tuneup

Adelaide, Australia (Sports Network) – Top-seeded and two-time champion Lleyton Hewitt was among Tuesday’s opening-round winners at the Adelaide International tennis event.

The former world No. 1 Hewitt handled Israeli Dudi Sela 6-2, 6-2 on the hardcourts at Memorial Drive. Hewitt titled here in his hometown in 1998 and 2000 and was the runner-up in 1999.

2007 Year in Review: ‘Twas Pretty Good, Ja!

NO.1 seed Lleyton Hewitt crushed Israeli Dudi Sela in a first-round match at the Adelaide International on Tuesday night.

Hewitt was untroubled in a comprehensive 6-2 6-2 victory in just 66 minutes before his home crowd at Memorial Drive.

The South Australian began in emphatic fashion, breaking his opponent’s serve in the first game to lay the foundation of a four-game winning streak to start his new year.

Scots seek World Cup redemption
The Scotland team failed to win a match at the last World Cup in 2000

When Scotland named their 24-man squad for the last World Cup in 2000, there was not a single Scottish-born player in it.

Instead, with the latest copy of Genealogy Monthly tucked under their arms, officials trawled England, Australia and New Zealand for players they thought would represent the Saltire with pride and distinction.
