Shaughnessy leads US in Hopman Cup play

PERTH, Australia – Meghann Shaughnessy, filling in for Serena Williams, got the United States off to a winning start and Mardy Fish clinched the win over India in the first match of the 20th Hopman Cup.

The No. 2-ranked U.S. team led 2-0 ahead of the doubles in the international mixed team event.

WHL: Bosch leads Tigers past Broncos

Medicine Hat centre Brennan Bosch almost doubled his scoring in one night.

Bosch had four goals, including the game-winner with 13 seconds left as the Tigers edged the Swift Current Broncos 6-5 Friday in Western Hockey League action.

Bosch had five goals heading into the game. He scored twice on the power-play and banked in the game winner from behind the goal-line to give the Tigers the come-from-behind victory.

PETER Moody foreshadowed an Oaks future for Skye Gold after she racked up a hat-trick in the MVRC Party 25/1 Handicap at Moonee Valley.

Ridden by Luke Nolen, the daughter of Galileo started the $3.50 favourite and added to wins at Pakenham and Kilmore with a brilliant finish to score by 1¼ lengths from Bay Route ($51) with Validator ($4.20) a long head away third in the 1600m race.

Moody said the AJC Oaks could be within reach of Skye Gold, who has raced only five times.

A REGULATION nick enhanced an extraordinary career when Adam Gilchrist claimed his record breaking 396th scalp today.

The prolific gloveman passed Ian Healy’s former record when he caught Wasim Jaffer (15) off the bowling of Brett Lee early on day four of the first Test to become Australia’s most successful wicketkeeper.

Gilchrist is now just ten dismissals behind South Africa’s Mark Boucher who holds the all-time record (406).

DALLAS — The Dallas Stars signed coach Dave Tippett on Friday to a one-year contract extension, through the end of the 2008-09 season.

Tippett is 212-109-45 in five seasons, the best record among active coaches. The 46-year-old has led the Stars to two 50-win seasons.

Ben Woodside scored 31 points and Brett Winkelman had 21 points and 14 rebounds to help the Bison of North Dakota State to a 68-60 victory over the Bison of Bucknell in the first round of the Golden Bear Classic Friday afternoon at Haas Pavilion. Josh Linthicum had a career day with 18 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots for Bucknell, which missed its first 17 3-point attempts of the night and could not overcome a 24-point second-half deficit.

Justin Castleberry had 14 points, all in the second half, and Patrick Behan had 10 for Bucknell, which fell to 4-7 on the season and will play either Long Beach State or host California on Saturday at 8 p.m. Eastern. North Dakota State (7-5) will play the winner of the second semifinal game in the championship game at 10:30 p.m. Eastern.

Newcastle’s Barton charged with assault

The 25-year-old Barton was one of three people arrested Thursday after an incident in downtown Liverpool around 5:30 a.m. local time that morning. Barton was remanded in custody until Jan. 3 after he appeared in the Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

"I also have to consider the safety of the public – you lashed out indiscriminately," magistrate Carol Myers said.

Roy Jones Jr. works out with Knicks
