‘A Disorderly Compendium of Golf’
The title of this post is actually the title of a book by Lorne Rubenstein and Jeff Neuman that my brother-in-law gave me for my birthday, along with a volume of golf short stories edited by William Hallberg called Perfect Lies.

A Disorderly Compendium of Golf is a random collection of anecdotes, trivia, rules, tricks, nicknames, history, quotes and more. As the authors write in the introduction, “We … share a fascination for the minutiae of the game.”

Devilbiss has been in business for more than 100 years. Founded back in 1888 when Dr. DeVilbiss made the first atomizer by combining an oil can, some tubing, and a bulb. Today they are the leader in the automotive refinishing products including the Devilbiss air compressor.

It was the son of Dr. DeVilbiss, Thomas that actually designed the spray gun for those automotive challengers. It would prove to be revolutionary reducing drying times on lacquer paint finishes to hours rather than weeks.

Watching the highly distilled You tube clips of Karim Benzema, one admired his speed, his clinical finishes, and the ease with which he scored those goals. But looking more closely there were a number of occasions when the defense were caught out of position, slow to read or react, and failed to put in a timely tackle. Against a quality defence, Benzema, even with his impeccable nose for goals, would have been pegged back a notch or two.

You go into the Ligue numbers and it becomes clear that teams are conceding far too many goals. Apart from Lyons and Nancy, the top two teams, who have healthy goal differentials, the rest of the teams live on wafer thin margins. The third and fourth placed teams are giving up 20+ goals which in the EPL would have dropped them down to 10th and 11th spot. In comparisons the other Leagues, the Serie, La Liga, and the EPL, the top placed teams on an average enjoy much larger margins of safety. The top teams, even in a more comparable league like the Eredivisie, give up far less goals.

AUSTRALIA have regained the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy with relative ease, thanks to a masterful century from captain Ricky Ponting and a good, all-round bowling performance.

Ponting was equal parts sublime and brutal in scoring an unbeaten 134 from 133 balls as Australia reached 6-282 from their 50 overs in the third and final Chappell-Hadlee Trophy game at Bellerive Oval.

In reply, New Zealnd lost early wickets and never recovered, despite some fine lower-order batting once the result had already been decided. The Kiwis were eventually bowled out for 168, but were 7-88 at one stage.
