MONTERREY, Mexico – Cuba defeated the Canadian women’s team 3-0 on Monday’s opener of the NORCECA women’s continental Olympic qualification championship.
Set scores were 25-20, 25-23 and 25-23, as Tammy Mahon of Holland, Man., had 10 points while Tasha Holness of Edmonton and Shelly Chalmers of Burnaby, B.C. finished with six points apiece.
"We had some problems at the beginning with a slippery floor, but then we recovered and played better," Canada head coach Naoki Miyashita said. "I hope we can come back more focused tomorrow."
The 24th-ranked Canadians are competing in Group A alongside Cuba (third) and Puerto Rico (19th) in the preliminary round. The Dominican Republic (14th), Mexico (25th) and Trinidad & Tobago (70th) round out Group B.
The U.S. has already qualified for the Olympic Games since placing third at last month’s FIVB World Cup in Japan, leaving the six top teams to compete for one Olympic berth in the continental qualifying tournament.
