WHL: Kings lose on home ice again

WHL

The Edmonton Oil Kings ended their season-high eight game home stand with a shootout loss against the Red Deer Rebels. The Oil Kings have won only two games on home ice.

Red Deer, however, snapped a two-game losing skid as Carter Smith’s shootout goal gave the Rebels a 4-3 victory Sunday in the WHL.

Smith deked backhand then forehand to beat Oil King netminder Alex Archibald on the Rebels’ second attempt to seal the victory.

Edmonton (12-19-2-3) opened the scoring on the power play with 58 seconds left in the first frame. Shayne Neigum recorded his first WHL goal, tipping a point shot past Red Deer (10-23-4-1) netminder Morgan Clark.

Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Calgary 2 Medicine Hat 1; and Silvertips 6 Winter Hawks 1.

At Edmonton, the Oil Kings built a two goal lead early in the second only to fall behind 3-2 as Red Deer responded with three goals within a minute and thirteen seconds. Brett Breitkreuz would bury a cross-ice feed for Edmonton’s second goal.

The Rebels responded 48 seconds later as Scott Doucet deked Archibald five-hole. Tomas Polak crashed the net for Red Deer’s second and Cass Mappin tipped a wrist from the point for their third for the 3-2 lead.

Edmonton’s Brent Raedeke snapped a 15-game goalless drought, banking a shot off the back of Clark to tie the game 3-3 with 4:29 remaining in the third.

The game began a home-and-home series which resumes on Dec. 28 in Red Deer when both teams return to action after the Christmas break.

 Hitmen 2 Tigers 1

At Calgary, Brandon Rowinski scored the game-winning goal and had an assist as the Hitmen (23-11-1-2) edged the Tigers (20-13-3-1).

Winter Hawks 1 Silvertips 6

At Portland, Ore., Shane Harper scores a goal and added two assists as Everett (18-16-0-2) stomped the Winter Hawks (6-28-0-1).
