OHL
For Ottawa captain Jamie McGinn this game was a long time coming.
McGinn, who led the 67′s last year in scoring with 46 goals, had been snakebitten in his last six contests, scoring just once.
But McGinn broke out of his slump against the Mississauga-St. Michael’s Majors, scoring a hat-trick en route to the 67′s 5-0 triumph Sunday in the OHL.
McGinn scored while shorthanded in the first period and at even strength later in the frame, then struck on the power play in the second.
"It’s been frustrating a little bit," said McGinn, who now has 17 goals this season. "All I can do is just keep on working hard every night and the pucks were going in (tonight)."
Adam Courchaine stopped all 33 shots he faced to pick up his first OHL shutout.
Thomas Kiriakou and Julien Demers each added a goal and an assist for the 67′s (17-13-1-2), who head into the league’s holiday break riding a four-game win streak that equals a season high.
Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Kitchener 5 Kingston 0; Guelph 3 Sault Ste. Marie 0; Saginaw 2 Brampton 1 and Oshawa 4 Sudbury 3 (OT).
At Ottawa, the 67s lost centre Logan Couture in the first period after a hard hit by Majors defenceman Tim Billingsley, but the 67′s player is expected to be OK.
Chris Carrozzi finished with 28 saves in a losing cause for the Majors (17-15-1-0), who were shut out for the second straight game.
A heavy snowstorm prevented all but a few hundred fans of the paid attendance of 7,184 from getting to the arena. OHL linesmen Peter Coleman and Steve Corlyon took charge of the game with the help of minor officials since any regular referees were unable to make the trip to Ottawa.
The Majors were able to make it since they left Mississauga following their 3-0 loss at home to the Soo Greyhounds on Saturday afternoon.
Rangers 5 Frontenacs 0
At Kitchener, Ont., Mavric Parks made 22 saves to earn the shutout as the Rangers (27-4-1-2) blanked the Frontenacs (8-21-0-1).
Storm 3 Greyhounds 0
At Guelph, Ont., Thomas McCollum made 26 saves to earn the shutout as the Storm (13-14-4-2) held off the Greyhounds (23-10-1-1).
Spirit 2 Battalion 1
At Brampton, Ont., Tomas Zaborsky scored the winning goal as the Spirit (14-14-3-1) rolled into the GTA in the midst of a winter snowstorm and emerged with a win, edging the Battalion (20-11-1-2).
Generals 4 Wolves 3 (OT)
At Oshawa, Ont., Shea Kewin scored 1:12 into overtime and added an assist as the Generals (20-9-1-3) edged the Wolves (8-25-1-1).
