NEWCASTLE Jets defeated Melbourne Victory 3-1 at Telstra Dome to dump the defending champions out of the 2007-2008 A-League finals race.
Two moments of Joel Griffiths magic effectively killed off the Victory’s hopes of a top-four berth, and powered the Jets back into the race for a top-two berth.
The Victory, dominant champions last season, are now locked in a race to avoid the competition wooden spoon after claiming an early 1-0 lead. They sit just one point above Perth, on equal points with Wellington Phoenix, a pale shadow in performance and ladder position of the side that carved up the A-League last season.

NEW South Wales are eyeing a return to the top of the Pura Cup table after dominating Queensland on day three at the Gabba.
Backing up skipper Simon Katich’s attacking declaration, the Blues pace attack has the home side battling at 3-79 in their quest for an unlikely 412 for victory.
It would take a record run-chase from Queensland to deny New South Wales, who sit second behind Victoria (26 points) on the competition table.

Capello’s first game in charge is against Switzerland on 6 February
New England boss Fabio Capello says the job will be his last in football and admits he has a hard task ahead of him.
“This is the final appointment of my career,” said the former AC Milan, Real Madrid, Roma and Juventus coach, who is confident he can succeed in the role.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Tiger Woods kept stopping his swing to check his position, and he looked neither happy nor comfortable with his progress. This was on the practice range, and it never got much better on the golf course Saturday at the Target World Challenge.
The result was a 5-under 67, the second-best score of the day.

Doncaster will confirm one of the unlikeliest rugby league stories of the year today by unveiling Ellery Hanley as their new coach.
The iconic former Great Britain captain, who has been out of the game since his sacking by St Helens at the start of the 2000 season, is thought to have agreed a three-year contract with the National League Two club. He has already met the players at training and will now take charge of their preparations for the coming season.
