NEW Zealander Robbie Deans has been named as the new Australia rugby coach in an historic three-year appointment that breaks fresh ground for the Wallabies.
The Australian Rugby Union confirmed the news at a press conference in Sydney, making Deans the first overseas coach to take control of the Wallabies, as successor to John Connolly.
Deans beat fellow candidates Ewen McKenzie, David Nucifora, Laurie Fisher, Alan Jones and John Muggleton after a controversial late interview for the role.

Bowl History
With the 2008 Fiesta Bowl marking Oklahoma’s 41st bowl appearance overall, OU is undoubtedly one of the most tradition-rich schools in the country. At 24-15-1 (.613), Oklahoma ranks No. 3 on the all-time bowl victories list.
The Sooners are going bowling for the ninth consecutive season, a school record. The Sooners have played in a bowl in each of Bob Stoops’ nine seasons, including six BCS bowls and three national championship games.

Ian Turner in his NYT article points to a survey show that Italians are the least happy people in Western Europe. There is a feeling of malessere, a collective funk – economic, political, and social. With a stagnating economy, a bloated and insecure bureaucracy, and an aging population, Italy has fallen way behind Western Europe in development. Only 36% of Italians trust their government compared to 64% of Denmark.
When soccer becomes part of that malaise then it leads to the sort of violence that one increasingly associates Italian soccer with.

Thousand Oaks, CA (Sports Network) – Emerging from the longest layoff of his career, Tiger Woods made a costly double-bogey Thursday at the last hole of the Target World Challenge to fall one shot off the first-round lead.
Woods made five birdies in 17 holes, then hit errant shots into the mulch and a water hazard at the 18th to post a three-under 69.

Kevin O’Neill is set to coach the 21st-ranked Arizona the rest of the season. He’s just not ready to take over the program permanently from Hall of Famer Lute Olson.
“This is not my team,” O’Neill said Thursday. “If it is anybody’s team it is Lute’s team until he decides he does not want to coach any more. That is the way I would look at Arizona basketball, either short term or long term.”
O’Neill coached at Marquette, Tennessee and Northwestern before a stint in the NBA.

RICHMOND, Va. — Michael Vick declared “I am not the bad person or beast I’ve been made out to be” and asked for leniency in a letter to the federal judge who sentenced him to 23 months in prison for a dogfighting conspiracy.
Vick made his handwritten plea from jail as he awaited Monday’s sentencing by Judge Henry E. Hudson. His five-page letter and several others from Vick supporters, including baseball great Hank Aaron and former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman, were released by the U.S. District Court in Richmond on Thursday.
