The long-awaited Mitchell Report on the use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball had a helping hand from north of the border.

Richard H. McLaren, a Professor of Law at the University of Western Ontario who also serves as a sports arbitrator, was part of the committee that helped research and table the 409-page document issued on Thursday.

McLaren, a member of the independent Court of Arbitration for Sport, also served as an on-site arbitrator for the Winter Olympic Games in 1998 and 2006, the Summer Olympic Games in 2000 and 2004, and the Commonwealth Games in 2002, and will be an onsite arbitrator at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.

He also chaired the Independent International Review Commission on Doping Control formed by the United States Olympic Committee and USA Track and Field to deal with alleged cover-ups of doping charges by U.S. track and field athletes. The Commission reported in July 2001.

McLaren joined the Faculty of Law at Western in 1972 and was Associate Dean from 1979-82.
