Liverpool, Real Madrid moving on

LONDON – Liverpool clinched an unlikely place in the next round of the Champions League alongside Real Madrid, FC Porto, Olympiakos and Schalke on Tuesday.

Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuyt scored to give Liverpool a 4-0 victory over Marseille in its final group game, seven weeks after the five-time European champions looked to be on the verge of elimination.

Free Agents catcher Paul Lo Duca and reliever Eric Gagne signed $5 million and $10 million, one year deals with the Washington Nationals and the  Milwaukee Brewers respectively.

Lo Duca is tapped to replace Brian Schneider behind the plate.  Schneider was part of the recent trade with the Mets in which the Nationals obtained young outfielder Lastings Milledge.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The new owners of the Nashville Predators wasted little time showing who’s in charge, promoting current general manager David Poile to president of hockey operations on Tuesday.

Lead owner David Freeman, who took over operation of the team and management of the team’s arena on Friday, the same day the team’s $193 million purchase of the team was finalized, also moved Ed Lang to president of business operations.

Laila Jayden Taylor was born Monday in Little Rock, Ark., the third child of former middleweight champion Jermain Taylor and his wife Erica. Taylor stayed home with wife and daughter rather than attend a news conference promoting his Feb. 16 rematch in Las Vegas with Kelly Pavlik.
