Andrew Strauss is set to play domestic cricket in New Zealand on a short-term contract with the Northern Knights ahead of England’s tour there.

Strauss, 30, has suffered a dip in form over the past year and was dropped for England’s current tour of Sri Lanka.

FORMER Australia international striker Dave Mitchell has been confirmed as the coach of Perth Glory after impressing club owners since the sacking of Ron Smith.

Mitchell has guided the club to two wins, a draw and one loss since taking over the struggling Glory a month ago. The club had previously played 18 games in almost a year without tasting victory.

The 3-1 over reigning A-League champion Melbourne was enough to convince owners Tony Sage, John Spence and Brett McKeon that Mitchell was the man for the job.

AUSTRALIAN Open champion John Senden believes the $1.45 million Australian PGA Championship at Coolum will be won with a record low score.

Senden said the lowest four-round score in the 101-year history of the tournament, set at 22 under par by Nick O’Hern and Peter Lonard last year, could tumble.

Senden said after a practice round that it was difficult to imagine the Hyatt Regency course could be in better condition.

STUART MacGILL is determined to play Test cricket again despite hand surgery virtually ruling him out of the four-Test series against India, beginning on Boxing Day.

Far from considering retirement after an injury-plagued Test against Sri Lanka in Hobart last month, the veteran Australia leg-spinner is aiming for tours of Pakistan and the West Indies early to mid-next year.

"At the moment my focus is on the tours. That’s a line I’ve drawn for myself," MacGill said on Tuesday after flying from Sydney to Melbourne to be examined by Australia team doctor Trefor James.

The Bucknell wrestling team wrapped up the fall semester by extending its winning streak to three straight duals as the Bison downed Franklin & Marshall, 41-6, in Davis Gym on Tuesday evening. With the victory, Bucknell improves to 3-4 (1-1 EIWA), while the Diplomats fall to 2-2 (0-2 EIWA).

Freshman José Matos (Williamstown, N.J./St. Augustine) started things off on a thrilling note for the Orange and Blue, winning in overtime, 6-4, over Jake Bucha in the 125-pound bout. Matos trailed 2-1 after the first period, but escaped in the second to tie the score at two. Then in the third, Matos scored a go-ahead takedown with 16 seconds remaining in the match, but Bucha escaped with seven ticks on the clock to force the extra period. Then in overtime, Matos took down Bucha at the buzzer to record the victory and put Bucknell out to a 3-0 advantage.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – A single french fry, reportedly dropped by David Beckham during his recent stay in New Zealand, is among souvenirs of the soccer superstar’s visit offered for sale on Internet auction sites.

A single bidder has offered one New Zealand dollar (76 cents Cdn) for the slightly salted piece of fried potato, which the seller claims was dropped by Beckham during a stroll around Wellington.

Jaffray powers Manitoba over Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa – Jason Jaffray scored two goals, including the go-ahead marker in the third period as the Manitoba Moose edged the Iowa Stars 4-3 Tuesday night AHL action.

Jaffray scored his ninth of the season on the power play in the second period to put the Moose up 2-1, and netted his second of the game at 6:34 in the third to give Manitoba the victory.
