While most of America relishes the fact that the Bowl Championship Series has now been exposed to the fullest possible extent, pardon the Oklahoma Sooners if they don’t really care. Yes, the boys from Norman performed a fine public service by throwing the BCS into complete chaos, but lost in that national storyline is this substantially important fact: Bob Stoops has won yet another league crown.

Yes, in case you missed it, Boomer Sooner has now claimed five Big XII titles in the past eight seasons; four in the past six; and three in the past four. While Ohio State and USC have had similar runs of dominance in the Big Ten and Pac-10 respectively, Oklahoma has remained the big dog in America’s heartland. When Vince Young and Texas won the 2005 national title, Oklahoma got relegated to the background in the league. And when the Longhorns beat OU in the 2006 regular season, everyone assumed that the Sooners would be stuck in second for at least one more year, perhaps two.

So today, sources have told the Spokesman that the list is now down to seven candidates. Without further adieu, first, the obvious five:
1) Mike Price (Really???)
2) John L. Smith
3) Paul Wulff
4) Bob Gregory
5) Dave Christensen
The usual suspects and names that have been bandied about. John L has been a quote machine of late. I seriously wonder if he’s set up a campaign headquarters with a bunch of staffers running around making calls on behalf of the candidacy of the next head coach of the WSU Cougars, John L. Smith! OK John, OK, we get it – you want the job.
But two other names have been leaked, and they are head-scratchers.
The Fantastic Seven?
First up, Brady Hoke, head coach of Ball State. Hoke is an interesting guy with a strong background with ties to Michigan, spending eight years there under Lloyd Carr on the defensive staff. His NW ties go all the way back to Oregon State, where he coached there from 1989-1994.

It seems a bit odd to tell the truth. Hoke played his college ball at Ball State and is a Ball State guy all the way. His wife went to Ball State, and their only daughter is a student there as well. But when a BCS program comes calling you at least have to listen. On the plus side, he’s got some great BCS assistant experience, at OSU and Michigan. But the downside, well, Hoke’s record isn’t what you would call flattering. 22-36 at Ball State? OK, he’s got them at 7 wins this year so they are going bowling, but still.

ESPN.com is reporting that the undefeated Peterson Brothers will kick off the 2008 season of ShoBox telecasts on Friday, January 4 at the Hard Rock in Biloxi, MS. According to promoter Brian Young, Anthony and Lamont Peterson will participate in 12-round contests against opponents to be named.

Since these are 12-round contests, it is assumed that the brothers will either defend their NABO titles (Anthony-lightweight, Lamont-junior welterweight) on this show or go after more regional titles. I don’t think a world title is in the offering yet.
