Scotland’s dreams are dashed as Italy advance to Euro 2008.
If you are the Azzurri the best thing for your team’s fortune is to have a crisis in your country involving match fixing or riots which leads to giving of their best. It sounds morbid but with Calcipoli contributing to the Machiavellian nature of the domestic league leading to the tragic attempted suicide of Juventus manager of Gianluca Pessotto and their future livelihood in disarray, the Italian team found itself fielding more questions for its off field activities than for their performances but they soldiered on and under Marcelo Lippi won their fifth Wordl Cup.
In beating the Tartans today, the Azurri were coping with another crisis that brewed in the aftermath of Gabriele Sandri’s death. One which has many foreign stars like Kaka and Clarence Seedorf questioning whether the Serie would recover its standing in the world.
Roberto Colautti, Argentine born Israeli striker is his team’s top scorer
Get ready for a nail biter today as Russia meet Israel in Ramat Gan which can decide not oly Russia’s fate but that of England too. Steve McLaren and the English squad will be following this match very closely.
Israeli captain Yossi Benayoun is going to miss this most crucial Group E encounter due to a adductor injury. On this match rests England’s sputtering hopes to qualify for Euro 2008. Croatia has already qualified and Russia with its win against England is favoured to win the second spot. England have an outside chance if Russia loses today.

So that happened. Yowza, what an ass-whoopin’. So much for Senior day, last home game of the season, bowl eligibility on the line, a team playing better vs. a team coming off an emotional home win, blah, blah, BLAH. I didn’t see this coming, nor did virtually any of the prognosticators out there. Hey, not that losing to OSU is any shame! Now a 7-win team and one that very likely could beat the Yucks in a few weeks. Then watch them win their bowl game for another miraculous 9-win, turnaround season that is fast becoming a Mike Riley specialty.
One more thing on Oregon State – they have become the model program that we should strive for. Think about it. They compete for at least a bowl bid every season now, and they threaten an upper-division finish when things go right. They play fast, hard, aggressive defense and they preach a strong running game with an outstanding offensive line that will kick your ass if you don’t bring it that day. They have a beautifully renovated stadium in Corvallis, which isn’t exactly Seattle if you follow my drift. They sell out their season ticket allotments, they pack the house and they make a hell of a lot of noise. They are, today, exactly where I hope our program can be, sooner rather than later. A sugar-daddy donor like Reser would sure be nice right now. Anyone know if Uncle Paul Allen has $25 million in the couch cushions to throw at the Martin Stadium remodel?? Didn’t think so. They’ve already gone to that well, and it was dry as a bone.
Juan Riquelme
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Juan Roman Riquelme continued to impress for Argentina without any club play as he scored twice in a 3-0 defeat of Bolivia to keep his side atop South American qualifying for the 2010 World Cup on Saturday.
Sergio Aguero scored the opening goal in the 40th minute, then Riquelme claimed his first of the match in the 56th, his third from a free kick in qualifying. His second goal seven minutes later was set up by FC Barcelona star Lionel Messi.
Jeff Burton Wins Busch Finale
HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Jeff Burton wrapped up the Busch Series car owner’s championship in style Saturday night, winning the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway to give Richard Childress his 11th NASCAR title.
QUEENSLAND all-rounder Ashley Noffke ripped through the Victoria top-order to give the Bulls the early jump in the Pura Cup clash at the Gabba.
Noffke took 3-19 from 11 searching overs as Victoria struggled to 5-71 at lunch on the opening day after being sent in to bat.
With the Gabba track well grassed and the skies overcast, Noffke made the most of the favourable bowling conditions.
The Bucknell women’s basketball team committed a pair of turnovers in the final 15 seconds and registered just two field goals in the final 12 minutes of play as it dropped a tight 53-51 decision to Hampton Saturday evening. The Bison were led by a season-high 16 points from Hope Foster, who also paced the team with seven rebounds.
Bucknell, which is off to its first 0-3 start since 2002-03, led the entire game until Hampton tied the game up at 48-all with just under seven minutes to play. The Bison recorded just three free throws the rest of the contest.
