QUEENSLAND all-rounder Ashley Noffke ripped through the Victoria top-order to give the Bulls the early jump in the Pura Cup clash at the Gabba.

Noffke took 3-19 from 11 searching overs as Victoria struggled to 5-71 at lunch on the opening day after being sent in to bat.

With the Gabba track well grassed and the skies overcast, Noffke made the most of the favourable bowling conditions.

He had Nick Jewell caught at first slip for a duck with the fifth ball of the day before sending dangerman David Hussey and top-scorer Rob Quiney packing for 9 and 31 respectively.

Andy Bichel (1-28) and Grant Sullivan (1-8), who had Bushrangers skipper Cameron White caught at point off with first ball, took the other wickets.

Bichel bowled six overs with an injured finger on his right hand, having sustained the injury in taking the catch off Jewell.

He spent the rest of the morning session off the field.

Former Australia one-day paceman Mick Lewis missed a place in the Victoria attack after getting a late call-up to the squad following an ankle injury to Dirk Nannes.

Michael Klinger made a rushed trip to Brisbane from Melbourne this morning to act as 12th man after Lewis sustained a hamstring injury in the gym yesterday.

The training mishap cost Lewis his place and ensured leg-spinner Bryce McGain would play on the seam-friendly wicket.
