WILLIE Mason has confirmed he has signed with the Sydney Roosters.
The Bulldogs forward, who has played 148 games for the Canterbury outfit, has agreed terms with the Bondi club and has been released from the final two years of his contract at Belmore.
He will be unveiled as a Roosters players at a 4pm ( EDT) press conference at the Sydney Football Stadium.
Mason has met with club officials and told the Nine Network it was understandable that people were linking him with the Roosters, as he has lived in the area for some time and has many friends around Sydney’s Eastern suburbs.
The veteran of 23 tests and 10 origin games for NSW has signed a three year contract, joining former team mates Mark O’Meley, Nate Myles and Braith Anasta in red white and blue.
Mason earned around $450,000 a season at the Bulldogs, meaning he represented a serious salary-cap issue for NRL clubs. However, the Roosters’ release of utility Ashley Harrison to the Gold Coast this week freed up around $220,000.
Mason, who had stated an interest in joining the Roosters, was sounded out by several clubs but it came down to two, with Cronulla also tabling an offer yesterday.
But the Roosters have beaten the Sharks to secure the services of Mason and he could be training with the Brad Fittler-coached team as early as Friday.
