PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Starting in July on the PGA Tour, players who register for a tournament could be given a locker, a tee time for their pro-am and a cup to submit a sample for their drug test.
The PGA Tour plans to start its drug-testing program next year after six months of an intensive education program, with penalties for a positive test ranging from a one-year suspension for the first offence to a lifetime ban if a player is caught three times.

Team Europe
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The PGA Tour decided to put another cup ahead of its own Tuesday, moving the FedEx Cup finale to the week after the Ryder Cup next year to allow Americans to be fresh as they try to end a decade of losing.
Without switching around the 2008 schedule, some players might have competed four consecutive weeks in the FedEx Cup, then headed straight to Valhalla Golf Club for the Ryder Cup, regarded as one of the most tiring and pressure-packed weeks in golf.

“You’re starting to sound like Ronaldo,” Sir Alex Ferguson quipped last week when it was put to him that his side might, on current form, be the best in Europe. If the Portuguese is his dressing room’s arch-optimist then he may also prove to be the talisman for as long as it takes Wayne Rooney to recover from his collision with training equipment during another exuberant training session.

Freshman Austin Daye scored 18 points to help No. 14 Gonzaga rout Idaho 80-43 on Tuesday night.
Jeremy Pargo added 14 points and Matt Bouldin 12 as Gonzaga (2-0) won despite 18 turnovers in a sloppy game.
Idaho (1-1) used defensive pressure to stay close in the first half, but they shot just 30 percent and had 10 shots blocked. They also committed 29 fouls, and the score would have been worse if Gonzaga had not made just 22 of 36 free throws.

The Detroit Tigers announced on Tuesday a deal to re-sign 39 year old veteran closer Todd Jones.Â
Jones, who had 38 saves for the Tigers last season; 117 saves over the last 3 seasons and 4 more in the 2006 post-season including their only win in the 2006 World Series, signed a one year, $7 million dollar deal in what has to be an indicator of the going rate for the current crop of free agent and arbitration-eligible closers. In fact, MLB’s Ken Mandel indicates that newly acquired Phillies closer Brad Lidge may command in the $7 million range through the arbitration process. Lidge, however, bests Jones’ lifetime ERA by .63, Jones standing at 3.93 and Lidge at 3.30 ERA.

The October 6 benefit card at the Hilton McLean Tyson’s Corner in McLean, VA that was co-promoted by Jimmy Lange Enterprises and Jackie Kallen’s Ice Promotions raised $5,170 for the family of the late world champion Diego “Chico” Corrales.
I’m truly proud that we raised more than $5,000 to help Diego Corrales’ family,†said Lange of the program that combined entertainment and philanthropy with a live boxing card. “My fans have been extremely loyal and generous in support of everything I do. I’m extremely grateful for everyone that helped organize and participate in the event. I want to personally thank Gary Shaw, Chico’s promoter, who was instrumental in putting us in touch with Michelle (Diego’s wife) and her children. We hope our small token of appreciation helps the family during the holiday season.â€

The Left Hook Boxing card coming to the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA on Saturday, November 17 is pretty much complete.
Front Royal, VA lightweight Andrew “The Doo Man” Farmer will headline the show participating in a six-round contest against Curtis Smith of Columbia, SC. Farmer (8-1, six KO’s) has won his last four bouts, including his last outing, a four-round unanimous decision over Jason Jordan on September 15 at the ABC Sports Complex. Smith (5-2, three KO’s) is also on a winning streak as he has won three in a row. Smith won his last outing by disqualification over William Armstead on February 23 in Atlanta, GA. Some may remember that Smith appeared at Michael’s Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD on January 28, 1999 when he lost a four-round unanimous decision to Ernesto Rodriguez.
The co-feature bout should be an exciting one as undefeated John “No Mercy” Mackey of Montgomery, AL takes on Charles “Murdock” Norwood of Roanoke, VA in a four-round contest. Both men have two things in common: They are hard hitters and both were born in DC. Mackey (6-0, three KO’s) is coming off a four-round unanimous decision over Damon Antoine on August 25 at Lee High School in Springfield. Norwood (3-1, one KO) won his last outing by four-round unanimous decision over Ron Reaves on October 6 in McLean, VA.
