The Brentford and Lewes first teams are in FA Cup action tomorrow, at Luton and Mansfield respectively, but it was the Bees youngsters who triumphed in last night’s FA Youth Cup tie at a chilly Griffin Park.

Brentford, clear favourites to progress to a Second Round tie at home to Swindon, failed to really test a slightly fragile-looking Lewes defence in the opening minutes. But the Sussex side didn’t set foot in Brentford’s half until the fourth minute and were clearly thinking more in terms of defence than attack.

A poor crossfield pass by a Lewes defender gifted Bees their first goal on 19 minutes. It went straight to left-winger Chris Flood, who had plenty of space in front of him in which to advance goalwards. Before he could be challenged he had shot low into the corner, giving Lewes ‘keeper Jack Adams little chance.

Two minutes later it was 2-0 and the visitors in their change strip of sky blue were crumbling. Lewis Ochoa looked up with the ball at his feet about 30 yards from goal and a brilliant right-footer flew into the net. Suddenly a big score seemed to be on the cards.

Lewes held it together despite some clattering tackles from a fitter, stronger team. Bees skipper Harry Mavromatis overstepped the mark to see yellow and there might have been one or two others. Fred Foreman’s free-kick missed the near post by inches as the underdogs came back into contention and they went on to enjoy a much more positive second half.

Stephen Hendry on Brentford’s right flank proved to be a major handful for the Lewes defence and he set up several chances for his team-mates before one low cross at speed was swept in at the far post by Ochoa for 3-0 on 71 minutes.

But it wasn’t Lewes’ cue to capitulate: Foreman netted from close range four minutes later and if Jack Walder’s long-range effort hadn’t been tipped over by Seb Brown, it would have made for an interesting last couple of minutes.

Lewes had put on a decent display overall and it must have been a thrill for the boys to play at a famous old ground like Griffin Park.

Billericay manager Matt Jones will be hoping to draw on his own FA Cup giant-killing attempts as a player when his Ryman Premier Division side host Swansea in the First Round this weekend.

Jones was a member of the Dagenham and Redbridge team, then still in the Conference, that were four minutes away from beating Premiership Charlton in the third round back in 2001.

Charlton netted a late equaliser and then won the replay in extra-time, but Jones believes he learnt a lot from the experience.

And that could spell trouble for League One side Swansea, despite their excellent start to the season.

“As a non-League side I think you need to approach these games in a certain way and I have been there before with Dagenham,” Jones said.

“I remember our first team meeting after we were drawn against Charlton, the manager Garry Hill told us not to just go out there to enjoy the game.

“You need to have the attitude that you can win the game, even though we know we probably have to play at the very top of our game.

“We’ve got to be honest and say that nine times out of ten Swansea will win, but we’ve got a puncher’s chance in what will be the biggest game in the club’s history.”

And even though Jones and everyone at the Essex club is disappointed their game has not been chosen as a live television match, he will be telling his players they can still make a massive name for themselves by knocking out the Welsh side.

“The FA Cup gets national exposure and as a non-League team, nothing can compare to beating a League side in this tournament,” the Billericay boss added.

“We can win our own league by 20 points, but nobody will remember that if we could get a victory on Saturday.”

LAS VEGAS (AP) - O.J. Simpson’s attorney sought to show Friday that the former football great confronted two memorabilia dealers with only one goal: to recover personal mementoes he believed were stolen.

Collectibles broker Tom Riccio testifed under cross-examination that Simpson appeared to ignore other items such as lithographs of football great Joe Montana and items autographed by baseball stars Pete Rose and Duke Snider.

“I don’t think he had any interest in any of that,” Riccio said.

“Mr. Simpson never said, ‘I want to steal some Pete Rose baseballs?”‘ Simpson attorney Yale Galanter asked.

“No sir,” Riccio replied, laughing.

Galanter also sought to show that Simpson made no effort to hide his plan in advance.

Riccio’s testimony came during the second day of an evidentiary hearing to determine if Simpson, Clarence “C.J.” Stewart and Charles Ehrlich should face armed robbery, kidnapping and other charges for the Sept. 13 hotel room encounter.

On Thursday, Riccio and memorabilia dealer Bruce Fromong testified that Simpson and several other men burst into a room at the Palace Station Hotel Casino on that day and carried off hundreds of items.

What’s hot:

  • Kriegel: A stunning turnaround in NY
  • Goodman: Celebrating Prosser’s legacy
  • O.J. back in court for Day 2
  • WR fined for attending funeral
  • Another tennis player offered bribe
  • Video: Peete’s Week 10 preview
    Top stories|Rumors|Video|Photos

On Friday, Galanter portrayed the group’s entry into the room as nothing out of the ordinary. Riccio agreed — up to a point.

“I had a key. I let them in,” he said. But after the group was inside the room, the once-calm situation “went south,” Riccio said.

On Thursday, the judge listened as prosecutors played a recording Riccio had made of the confrontation. On it, Simpson and others are heard screaming at the memorabilia dealers and shouting profanities.

Also Thursday, Fromong testified that Simpson took all the memorabilia he had brought to the room, which included the Montana, Rose and Snider items as well as Simpson materials. Simpson also took his cell phone, Fromong said.

Simpson, 60, and Stewart and Ehrlich, both 53, face 12 criminal charges. A conviction on the kidnapping count could result in a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole. An armed robbery conviction could mean mandatory prison time.

Fromong and Riccio were the first of eight witnesses prosecutors say they expect to call before the hearing ends.

Former co-defendants Michael McClinton, Walter Alexander and Charles Cashmore are expected to testify that Simpson asked for guns to be brought along to show they were serious about retrieving the items that he claimed were his.

Simpson has maintained in interviews and through his lawyers that no guns were displayed, that he never asked anyone to bring gun, and that he did not know anyone had guns.

Riccio testified Friday that Simpson did not have a gun nor did he ask any of the other men to draw a weapon, although he said he did see one of the men in the group pull a gun during the confrontation.

“Maybe you didn’t see a gun but there was a gun,” he said he told Simpson later.

Riccio said he set up the hotel room meeting after being contacted by memorabilia dealer Alfred Beardsley, who he said told him he had stolen O.J. Simpson memorabilia that he wanted to find a buyer for.

“He came right out and said it was stolen from OJ’s trophy room. Those were his exact words,” Riccio said. Other items, Riccio said Beardsley told him he had, once belonged to Simpson’s late mother and were taken from a storage locker she didn’t pay the bill on.

When he passed this on to Simpson, he said, the former football star was angry and put together a plan to get the materials back.

Riccio said he warned Simpson that Beardsley might not really have what he claimed. “I made it clear to O.J. that this guy’s so unstable he may just be saying he had the stuff,” Riccio said.

The Bucknell volleyball team will close out the 2007 season this weekend as the squad will travel to Army and Holy Cross, facing the Black Knights on Saturday and the Crusaders on Sunday. Both matches are set to begin at 4 p.m. Entering this weekend’s action, the Bison are 11-16 on the year, 4-8 in Patriot League play.

    BISON VOLLEYBALL NOTEBOOK

    About the Bison
    - Senior Jenna Henderson (Elk Grove, Calif./Laguna Creek) currently leads the Bison in kills with an average of 4.51 per game and is hitting a team-best .271. This past weekend against Navy on Senior Night, Henderson broke the program’s career kills record, previously held by Melissa Wharton (1,377). Henderson now has 1,386 career kills and with 415 on the season, is seven shy of breaking Bucknell’s single season record, also held by Wharton, who had 421 in 1996. Henderson is five digs away from her 1,000th of her career, as well. If she reaches that milestone, she will join Brandi Trapasso ‘04 as the only two players in school history to total 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. Henderson ranks second in the league in kills per game and 11th in hitting percentage.
    - Freshman Heidi Kamp (Springfield, Ore./Henry D. Sheldon) paces the Bison in blocks with 75 (0.79 per game) to rank 10th in the Patriot League, while junior setter Shannon Pitsch (Oak Brook, Ill./Fenwick) has a team-best 35 service aces on the year (0.39 per game). Pitsch is averaging 11.17 assists per game and is 287 shy of the program’s career record, currently held by Amy Turnshek ‘98. She ranks third in the Patriot League in assists per game and ninth in service aces per game.
    - Junior Sheena Czipri (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) holds a squad-best average of 3.00 digs per game. She set a new career high with 18 against Navy on Nov. 3.

    Milestones for Opalski
    - Cindy Opalski coached in her 500th match as head coach of the Bison on Sept. 1 at Duquesne. Then when Bucknell topped Morgan State, 3-1, on Sept. 5, it gave Opalski her 350th career victory. She is currently 357-284 in 21 seasons as a head coach. Bucknell’s win over Lehigh on Sept. 21 gave Opalski her 100th Patriot League victory. She leads all active coaches in the league, currently with 103.

    Scouting the Army Black Knights
    - The Black Knights enter Saturday’s match with a record of 22-4, 10-2 in league play. Army holds a 17-13 advantage in the all-time series with Bucknell that began in 1989. Earlier this season on Oct. 13, the Black Knights picked up a 3-1 victory in Lewisburg. In that match, the Bison won game one, 30-27, before dropping the next three, 30-24, 31-29 and 31-29.
    - Rachael Breinling and Jamie Clark lead the Black Knights’ attack with averages of 3.47 and 3.29 kills per game, respectively. Clark is also hitting a team-best .368 and has 91 blocks to her credit, while Breinling follows with 81 blocks.
    - Setter Maureen Bannon holds an average of 11.78 assists per game and Shara Hoffman boasts a team-best average of 3.52 digs per game.

    Scouting the Holy Cross Crusaders
    - With a match against Colgate slated for 5 p.m. on Saturday, the Crusaders enter the weekend with a record of 4-22 (1-11 PL). Bucknell leads the all-time series against Holy Cross, which began in 1986, with a record of 23-9. The Bison have come away with a win in the last 12 meetings between the squads, including a 3-0 victory earlier this season on Oct. 12 in Lewisburg.
    - Christine Strawson heads up the offense for Holy Cross with an average of 4.03 kills per game and a .286 hitting percentage.
    - Setter Chelsey O’Donnell holds an average of 9.53 assists per game.
    - Molly Anderson leads the squad in digs (3.78 per game), Meagan Merinder has a team-best 47 blocks on the year and Katie Fitzpatrick has 34 service aces, a team high.

Recapping Bucknell’s Matches Against American and Navy
    - On Friday, Nov. 2, Bucknell suffered a 3-0 setback against American in Davis Gym, dropping the games by the scores of 30-21, 30-16 and 30-28. Kamp was the lone Bucknell player to reach double-figures in kills as she totaled a team-high 12, followed by Henderson with eight. Henderson led the squad in digs with 13 and added three block assists. Pitsch and classmate Czipri contributed nine digs apiece, while Pitsch also dished 25 assists.
    - On Saturday, Nov. 3, Henderson totaled 19 kills to help her break the program career record, but it was not enough as Bucknell fell to Navy, 3-0. The Midshipmen took the games by the scores of 32-30, 31-29 and 31-29. Henderson hit .395 for the Orange and Blue with her 19 kills coming with just four errors on 38 attempts, while also contributing 13 digs for a double-double. Behind Henderson, Kamp and junior Emilie Hardinge (Darien, Conn./Darien) followed with nine kills apiece on the night. Hardinge added 13 digs, which trailed only Czipri’s total of 18. Setters Pitsch and Allison Gittings (Dayton, Md./Glenelg) chipped in with 33 and 11 assists, respectively.

    More transfer rumours for today:

    Peter Crouch transfer saga

Sven Goran-Eriksson today insists he’s in love with Man City’s fans. Expect to see him to shower his latest floozy with gifts - Michael Owen and Peter Crouch, for starters - before the paparazzi catch him cosying up to a younger, perkier set of fans by the end of the week.

He’ll have to be quick if he wants Crouch, mind, Harry Redknapp is already at the front of the queue in the Liverpool club shop, trying to haggle Rafa Benítez down from his £12m asking price. Harry’s only willing to go to eight bars, see, since he knows Rafa needs a few sheets himself so he can snaffle Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta.

    Chelsea situation

All of this seems a bit small fry when you hear that Real Madrid, Milan and Bayern Munich are all ready to pay more than twice that sum to pinch Didier Drogba from Chelsea. Poor Didier has been feeling mighty lonesome since his chum Jose departed Stamford Bridge, and thinks the best way to get over it might be to pick up another hefty signing bonu… sorry, make a clean break. Then again, it might not be that clean - Milan and Real would both like to bring Frank Lampard over with him.

    Ambitious QPR

Of course, both those players must really be smarting that they haven’t received any interest yet from QPR. Just one day after Flavio Briatore let slip that he wanted to eventually bring Francesco Totti to Loftus Road, the man he intends to appoint as manager, Francesco Guidolin, has let slip that he also reckons he can bring Alessandro del Piero to London.

John Hartson coming out of retirement

If that isn’t ridiculous enough for you then try this one on for size - John Hartson is still playing professional football. Norwich were so stunned by this discovery that they’ve decided to take him on loan from his retirement home in West Brom.

Kansas City Wizards vs. Houston Dynamo
    Saturday - 8:30pm ET/5:30pm PT
TV: Fox Soccer Channel (30 min pre&post), FSE, HDNet

So if the Wizards pull off the upset, they will be the champions of a conference to which they do not belong. That would make for an interesting footnote in the MLS story.

Can the Dynamo make 2007 a 2006 repeat? All they need to do is get past an uneven Wizards side to make it all come true, but that could prove harder then it looks.

The Wizards will need Eddie Johnson at full steam if they want to make it happen in Houston. Scott Sealy is a dangerous attacker, but having just one player causing pain for the Houston defense is not going to be enough. Johnson looked lively at Chivas last week, but he was much better at putting the ball over the crossbar then under it.

The Dynamo need to keep the momentum from their thrilling victory last Saturday going. Brian Ching and Dwayne De Rosario will be important as always, but if they really want to take it to KC, they will need the midfield to shut down the Wizards quick counters and they will need their defense to not give up a goal off a sloppy event in the box (something they do a bit too often).

Much like the New England in their match, Houston has players everywhere that can strike at goal while KC, like Chicago, are limited. Also, Houston has home pitch advantage and is not suffering from injury woes like Chivas, meaning this one will be theirs to lose. In the end, it will be a harder struggle then most expect, but Houston will move on to the finals.

Prediction: Me: KC 0-2 HD, Wife: KC 1-2 HD

    Justin Wilson

With the championship already secured, the focus will shift to the battle for second place at the season ending Champ Car event in Mexico City this weekend.

Justin Wilson leads Robert Doornbos by 12 points in the chase for second place. Wilson, who is the favourite to replace Bourdais at Newman/Haas/Lanigan next season, has a second place finish and a victory in each of the last two races to move ahead of the "Flying Dutchman".

"Finishing 2nd in the championship is really important to the whole team and everyone at RuSPORT is determined to go out on top," said Wilson, who has a win and two poles at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit. "Mexico City has always been a successful event for us as a team, so we’re looking forward to going out and getting pole position and will be trying hard to win the race."

Doornbos started the year with six podiums in the first nine races but hasn’t finished in the top three in the last four races. Having already clinched the Rookie of the Year title, he would like nothing more than to secure runner-up status in the championship.

"I know that I’m one of only a few drivers who has never seen the circuit but that has been the case almost every weekend this season," said Doornbos. "I’m sure we can do a good job and hopefully finish where we started the season.. on the podium!"

Bourdais clinched his fourth straight series championship last month in Australia but will be looking to leave the open-wheel series on a high note. The Newman/Haas/Lanigan driver has two wins and a second place result in the last four races in Mexico City and he’s one victory shy of tying rival Paul Tracy on the all-time wins list with 31.

"Obviously you don’t want to finish your career in the series with some frustration or regret," said the Frenchman who will realize his dream of racing in Formula One next season with Toro Rosso. "It would be great to have a good weekend again.  We’ll give our very best and hope we can finish in style."

The battle for fourth through ninth is also tight with 22 points separating Team Australia’s Will Power from Oriol Servia.
