Nov. 4, 2007

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Oklahoma women’s tennis team concluded its fall slate Sunday, Nov. 4, with the completion of the San Diego State Invitational.

The Sooner duo of Christi Baxley and Tara Eckel won their first doubles title as a pair, claiming the flight two doubles bracket with an 8-3 win over San Diego State’s Ozge Atalay and Olivia Colman.

“I liked what I saw in doubles,” OU head coach Mark Johnson said. “Christi and Tara both played well all weekend and they played great together.”

In the flight one bracket of doubles play, the OU pair of Chelsea Orr and Maria Kalashnikova bounced back from a quarterfinal loss to end their fall season on a win. They defeated San Diego’s Ellie Faulkner and Helene Lindstrand 8-1.

In singles action, sophomore Elena Antakova bounced back after a first round loss to claim the flight four consolation title. Antakova defeated San Diego’s Milou Teeling in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

“Elena played really well after that first match,” Johnson said. “I am pleased with how she finished.”

Oklahoma ends its fall season with freshman Ana-Maria Constantinescu appearing in two finals, Orr winning the Colorado Invitational and a 41-31 overall team record.

“I thought the fall season went well,” Johnson said. “We have some things to work on before the spring, but we saw some good competition and won some big matches.”
