The musical Chicago is based on the play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins who covered the 1924 trials of murderesses Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner for the Chicago Tribune. Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb wrote the book. With music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, it is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice, and the concept of the ‘celebrity criminal’. Set in prohibition era Chicago The Musical, the original production opened on Jun 3, 1975 and closed on Aug 27, 1977 after 936 performances. The success of Chicago The Musical group rose to greater heights when it was revived on Nov 14, 1996 and there have been 4234 performances as of Jan 14 2007.

Act 1 opens as the Overture ends. Velma Kelly is introduced as a vaudevillian who shot the other half of her sister act when she caught her husband with her sister. She belts out ‘All That Jazz’ as Roxie Hart’s story unfolds. Nightclub regular Fred Casely is her lover and is murdered in cold-blood. Convinced that the victim was a burglar, Roxie’s husband Amos cheerfully takes the rap.

The 5570 is the latest colour laser to join the established magicolor family. With a quoted top speed of 35ppm for mono and 30ppm for colour, it looks capable of satisfying high-volume workgroup printing and uses Konica Minolta’s Simitri HD polymerised toner technology, which claims to deliver superior print quality.

Simitri HD uses toner particles that are uniform in shape, and Konica Minolta claims this allows the printer to deliver finer detail and use less toner than the competition. It also claims the toner melts at much lower temperatures, allowing the printer to save up to 15% on power consumption and reducing paper curling. Plus, it emits 40% less CO2 than conventional toner.

While modern bungee jumping has become known and practiced worldwide, what is less understood is the physics behind bungee jumping. Interestingly enough, the extreme sport originated from spiritual rituals of South Pacific natives, who had no idea of the science behind the sport. Modern bungee jumping enthusiasts find much comfort in the idea that someone has worked through the math required to perform a safe jump. So who developed the physics of bungee jumping and how sure are the modern practitioners of the sport that it is relatively safe? Let’s start by taking a look at the origins of the science behind the sport.

Years before the discovery of the land diving natives on Pentecost Island, a British mathematician named Robert Hooke was discovering the physics of bungee jumping. He began working as an assistant to the famous scientist Robert Boyle in 1653. However, it wasn’t until 1660 that he formulated and wrote down Hooke’s Law of Elasticity. In laymen’s terms, Hooke’s law basically tells us how much tension a spring can endure, and the maximum length it will reach. Hooke’s law can be used on any material that is considered linear-elastic, or stretching lengthwise. Oddly enough, rubber is usually considered non-linear, because variations of stress and temperature can have a significant impact on the elasticity of the rubber.
