MADRID, Spain – Defending champion Justin Henin was drawn in a tough group Saturday at the Sony Ericsson Championships.
The top-ranked Belgian, who won the French and U.S. Open in a career-high nine titles in 2007, is in the yellow round-robin group with Australian Open champion Serena Williams, No. 3 Jelena Jankovic and Russian teenager Anna Chakvetadze.
Second-ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova, French Open finalist Ana Ivanovic, 2004 champion Maria Sharapova and Daniela Hantuchova were drawn in the red group.
The top two players from each group will advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
Only the top eight players qualified for the US$3 million season-ending tournament.
Wimbledon champion Venus Williams withdrew last week due to illness.
