One thing Billy Donovan could always count on over the last two years was his team playing with maximum energy and effort. Since practice kicked off a few weeks ago, that was his biggest concern, but his very young basketball team responded in their first exhibition game of the season.

The amount of physical exercise that you exert during the day is one of the key ingredients to helping you get a good sleep at night. The more active your body is during the day, the more likely you are to relax at night and fall asleep faster. With regular exercise you’ll notice that your quality of sleep is improved and the transition between the cycles and phases of sleep will become smoother and more regular. By keeping up your physical activity during the day, you may find it easier to deal with the stress and worries of your life.

Research and studies indicate that there is a direct correlation between how much we exercise and how we feel afterwards.

You should try and increase your physical activity during the day. The goal here is to give your body enough stimulation during the day so that you aren’t full of energy at night.

Your body requires a certain amount of physical activity in order to keep functioning in a healthy manner. It is also important to note that you should not be exercising three or four hours before you go to bed.

The ideal exercise time is in the late afternoon or early evening. You want to make sure you expend your physical energy long before it is time for your body to rest and ready itself for sleep.

You should attempt to exercise at least three or four times a week for a period of 30 minutes or so. You can include walking or something simple. If you prefer, you can include strenuous activities such as running as well.

The goal here is to increase your heart rate and strengthen the capacity of your lungs. By adding a regular exercise activity to your daily schedule will help you to improve your overall health and help you emotionally as well.

Along with running and walking there are several other physical activities that you can add to your daily life to increase your level of physical activity. If you are battling not sleeping, you’ll find aerobic exercise to be the best.

Your goal with exercise is to increase the amount of oxygen that reaches your blood stream. Overall, there are many types of aerobic exercise for you to choose from. The activities include running, biking, using a treadmill, dancing, and jumping rope.

There are some non aerobic exercises that you may find beneficial to help you solve your amnesia problem.

Yoga Yoga is an exercise that has a stimulatory effect on your nervous system, especially the brain. Yoga utilizes breathing techniques and yoga postures to increase the blood circulation to the brain, promoting regular and restful sleeping patterns. The regular practice of yoga will help you to relax as well as relieve tension and stress.

Tai Chi Tai Chi is an ancient art of breathing and movement that was developed by the Chinese monks. The movements involved are slow and precise, which is ideal if you have joint pains or you are unable to participate in high aerobic exercises. Research has shown that Tai Chi can help with insomnia by promoting relaxation.

If you discover that you don’t have any time to exercise on a regular basis, you should try to sneak moments of activity into your schedule. Whenever possible, you should take the stairs instead of the elevator, as little things like that will do wonders for your body.

You should also park your car around the corner and walk that extra block or two to get to your destination. As you may know, there are many small things you can add to increase the activity in your life. Your overall goal here is to have a healthy and well balanced life - with plenty of sleep.

Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso will leave McLaren-Mercedes after just one tumultous Formula One season.

"Following a meeting between Fernando Alonso and McLaren, it was agreed that it would be in the best interests of both parties to bring the relationship to an end," the team said in a statement on Friday after Spanish media reports confirmed the split.

"Both parties believe that this was the right decision."

Alonso’s agent said the Spaniard is free to sign with any other team without restriction and that neither side would pay a financial penalty for terminating the contract early.

Alonso expressed his disappointment that the situation with the Woking-based team did not work out, saying there were no hard feelings towards the team.

"Since I was a boy I had always wanted to drive for McLaren, but sometimes in life things do not work out," he said. "I continue to believe that McLaren is a great team. Yes, we have had our ups and downs during the season, which has made it extra-challenging for all of us, and it is not a secret that I never really felt at home."

The two-time world champion reiterated that, despite persistent rumors of favouritism within the team - some of which was suggested by Alonso himself - he always felt he had an equal opportunity to win.

Team boss Ron Dennis, whose relationship with the Spaniard deteriorated to the point where he admitted they were not speaking to each other, wished Alonso well.

"He is a great driver but for some reason the combination of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and Fernando has not really worked out, and in the end we reached a stage where none of us could find a way to move forward.

"We all believe that our joint decision to part company is for the best."

Dennis added that an announcement on who will fill Alonso’s vacancy next to Lewis Hamilton will be made "in due course". Heikki Kovalainen and Nico Rosberg have been mentioned as possible replacements, however, both are under contract to other teams.

Alonso’s departure from McLaren had put the driver’s market on hold as teams and drivers waited for a resolution to the ongoing saga. The guessing begins as to where the Spaniard will end up.

Renault boss Flavio Briatore has already said he would be interested in welcoming Alonso back but there is a question of money. The French manufacturer are known to be one of the more frugal teams on the grid and would likely need the help of a sponsor to lure Alonso back, who was reportedly earning more than $25-million US a year at McLaren. Renault have yet to confirm their driver lineup but rookie Heikki Kovalainen appears to be the future of the team, leaving veteran Giancarlo Fisichella on the outside.

Alonso’s desire to be the clear number one on a team likely rules Ferrari out of the mix. It would be hard to envision the Scuderia asking Kimi Raikkonen to take a back seat to Alonso, especially after winning the world championship this season. The Spaniard would be walking into the same type of situation he is leaving at McLaren.

Honda and Red Bull have recently emerged as candidates for Alonso. Neither team are immediate contenders for the title, so it would be a few years before the Spaniard could even think of challenging for the title. Money would not be an issue at either team. The driver situation has already been finalized at both teams but as we’ve seen in F1, there are always ways to get out of a contract.

BMW-Sauber are clearly on the brink of breaking into the top echelon of the sport and it could be that a driver of Alonso’s skill and status is what they need to push them over the edge. Pressure will be on the team to score their first win in 2008 as the next step in the team’s evolution.

Toyota would appear to be the big unknown. They have a driver opening and they have the money. If Jarno Trulli is willing to play a supporting role - much the same way Fisichella did at Renault - the Japanese team may be able to finally make some strides and break away from the middle of the pack.

Joe Torre Becomes New Dodgers Manager

LOS ANGELES — Joe Torre was hired Thursday to manage the Los Angeles Dodgers, taking the job two weeks after walking away from the New York Yankees.

“Joe Torre comes with a great resume,” Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said on a conference call. “What he’s done the last 12 years is as powerful as any manager in recent memory.”

The winningest manager in postseason history, Torre moved from one storied franchise to another, agreeing to a three-year, $13 million contract. He becomes the Dodgers’ eighth manager since they left his hometown, where he rooted for the rival New York Giants.

“As a kid growing up, you didn’t like them,” Torre said on WFAN radio in New York before the hiring was announced. “As a player, to me the Dodgers were the Yankees of the National League because … you either loved them or you hated them.”

The 67-year-old Torre will be introduced at a news conference Monday at Dodger Stadium. He succeeds Grady Little, who resigned Tuesday after two seasons and with a year remaining on his contract.

ESPN.com on Torre hiring

Torre’s departure from the Yankees, and that of his hiring to manage the Dodgers, failed to create a big buzz in Lakers-loving L.A. J.A. Adande

The Dodgers have Joe Torre. But they need a lot more than that if they’re going to be a factor, Gene Wojciechowski writes. Story

With Joe Torre taking over as the Dodgers’ manager, Yankees-Dodgers is must-see baseball theater. Again. Jayson Stark

Torre joins the Dodgers for their 50th anniversary season in Los Angeles, hoping to spur October success.

Favored to win the NL West this year, the Dodgers finished fourth. They have only one playoff victory since winning the 1988 World Series under Tom Lasorda.

“I’m so happy for him. I think his record speaks for itself,” said Lasorda, a special adviser to Dodgers owner Frank McCourt. “I think what he accomplished with the Yankees, he should have been able to control his destiny.

“We’re happy that he’s here — very happy.”

Torre guided the Yankees to four World Series championships from 1996-2000, and they made the playoffs in all 12 years he managed them. New York lost to Cleveland last month, eliminated in the first round for the third straight year.

Following that defeat, the Yankees offered Torre a one-year contract with a pay cut. He earned $7.5 million last season — more than any other big league manager by far.

Calling the performance incentives in the proposal “an insult,” Torre turned it down. He was hired by the Dodgers on the same day the Yankees introduced Joe Girardi as their manager.

The Dodgers had the NL’s best record in mid-July. During their late-season slide, problems surfaced between older and younger players on the team, prompting criticism of Little.

“I think he’s going to do a good job in the clubhouse because he’s got great leadership abilities,” Lasorda said of Torre. “He knows how to handle a ballclub.”

Since Lasorda left during the 1996 season after suffering a heart attack, the Dodgers are 1-9 in three playoff appearances. One of those was in 2006, Little’s first year as manager, when the Dodgers won the NL wild card with an 88-74 record but were swept by the New York Mets in the first round of the playoffs.

Torre ranks eighth on baseball’s career list with 2,067 victories. He also managed the Mets, St. Louis and Atlanta but won only one division title in the NL, in 1982 with the Braves.

He passed former Dodgers managers Leo Durocher (2,009) and Walter Alston (2,040) last season on the career wins list. His teams have won 76 postseason games.

Colletti said he met face-to-face with Torre, though he declined to say when or where.

“I asked him, ‘Do you really want to get back into something like this?’ He looked at me and he said, ‘There’s no doubt in my mind what I want to do and where I want to do it,’ ” Colletti said. “He likes the idea that the Dodgers are the franchise that is looked upon in many ways as one of the great icons in American sports. He likes the challenge of that, the market size, the chance to take a club that hasn’t had a chance to go to the World Series since 1988 and do something about that.

“I don’t have any doubts that his appetite is there and he’s up for the challenge.”

Colletti said he first spoke with Torre about four days ago.

“I went into it hopeful, curious — probably more curious than hopeful,” Colletti said. “By the time we got done talking, I was more hopeful than curious.”

Joe Torre is one of the most respected men in the game of baseball. As a player, a broadcaster, a manager and in his life off the field, Joe is a winner through and through.

– Dodgers owner Frank McCourt

Teams are generally directed to interview at least one minority candidate for open managerial jobs. The Dodgers were granted an exemption by commissioner Bud Selig, however, because of a strong track record on minority hirings.

Earlier this week, the Dodgers acknowledged they talked to Girardi about potentially replacing Little. Colletti said he did so because he was aware Little was leaning toward stepping down.

Don Mattingly, Torre’s bench coach this year, is set to join his mentor in Los Angeles as hitting coach. Mattingly lost out to Girardi for the Yankees’ managerial job.

Mattingly’s son, Preston, is a minor leaguer in the Dodgers’ organization.

“We don’t have a coaching staff yet,” Colletti said. “We’re talking to a bunch of former players and coaches. We’re not quite there yet.”

Mattingly could be in line to manage the Dodgers when Torre retires. Considering his age, that probably won’t be too many years down the road.

“Joe is 67 years old. We don’t expect Joe to manage a very, very long time,” Colletti said, adding it would make sense to “groom somebody under Joe’s direction” the way Lasorda was groomed under Alston.

Alston managed the Dodgers from 1954-76, and Lasorda was their manager from 1977-96. Torre is the team’s sixth manager since Lasorda stepped down.

Torre completed a $19.2 million, three-year contract with the Yankees this season. He made $7.5 million this year _ the highest salary among major league managers _ and the Yankees offered $5 million for next year with an additional $3 million in performance bonuses.

“Joe Torre is one of the most respected men in the game of baseball,” McCourt said. “As a player, a broadcaster, a manager and in his life off the field, Joe is a winner through and through.”

McCourt said on the season’s last day that Little would return as manager next season. In resigning Tuesday, Little insisted it had nothing to do with reports that the Dodgers were talking to Torre.

With his track record, Torre seems destined to follow Alston and Lasorda into the Hall of Fame.

“There’s definitely a locker waiting for him in Cooperstown, that’s for sure,” Lasorda said. “I’ve known him for close to 30 years and we’ve been good friends.”

Now that John Paxson has foreclosed any short-term possibility of the Bulls’ dealing for Kobe Bryant, let’s speculate about the consequences.

As before, the ball is in Kobe’s court — and he’ll undoubtedly pick it up and shoot it. With his destination-of-choice no longer available, Kobe will have to swallow his disappointment, choke back his anger, and play out the season with the Lakers. His only other option is to relax his no-trade clause and consider where else he might want to play (and live).

Assuming that several peripheral players would have to be added to the following equations to make the dollar-signs balance, here’s what’s possible and what’s not:

To Phoenix for Shawn Marion and Leandro Barbosa

With Marion’s discontent, and the expected emergence of Marcus Banks, this would be a no-brainer for the Suns — and would probably guarantee them the championship. The only foreseeable problem might be Kobe’s dismay at having to concede so much ball-time to Steve Nash.

Because Marion isn’t an adequate passer and can’t create his own shots, the Lakers would be taking a huge gamble. Sure, the Matrix would help their porous defense, but is that enough? Plus, Barbosa performs best in the open court, whereas the Lakers rarely run.

Mainly because of the Lakers’ reluctance to strengthen a conference rival while getting a highly questionable return, this deal is a no-go.

To Washington for Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison

Jamison would have to be included simply because Arenas for Bryant straight-up is too lopsided a deal for the Lakers to even consider. Even with Jamison in the mix, this exchange will never happen because the Wizards aren’t a serious contender anyway, and with two of their Big Three being replaced by only Kobe, they would be at best a seventh or eighth seed.

    Not a chance.

To Philadelphia for Andre Iguodala and Andre Miller

A terrific move for the Lakers. For Philly, the fan attraction of Kobe’s coming home would have a huge impact on their attendance — and the 76ers’ future would look brighter than ever. But Kobe is not interested in being the only bona fide stud on a rebuilding team.

    Never happen.

To Philadelphia for Andre Iguodala, Kyle Korver and Jason Smith

This package might be closer to the mark, but Bryant would have the same objection as before.

    Nope.

To New Jersey for Jason Kidd and either Vince Carter or Richard Jefferson

A great move for the Nets. But J-Kidd is too old for the Lakers to invest their immediate future in him.

    No way.

To Sacramento for Ron Artest and Kevin Martin

Add Andrew Bynum and Vlad Radmanovic to the mix and the Kings would certainly have to be interested. This would be an advantageous trade for both sides, but once again the Kings would still be an inferior ball club and Kobe would likely balk. Also the Brothers Maloof are disinclined to make a deal with the hated Lakers.

Could happen, should happen, but won’t happen.

To Detroit for Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and Amir Johnson

Add Brynum and this is far from being a bad idea for both teams. With Chauncey Billups, Rasheed Wallace, Antonio McDyess, Jason Maxiell and the underrated Jarvis Hayes still on board, the addition of Kobe just might provide the spark the Pistons need to push them over the top. The Lakers, meanwhile, would also get a close approximation of the “equal value” they’ve been seeking.

Does the Pistons’ front office have the guts to pull the trigger? Probably not.

To Denver for Carmelo Anthony and Nene Hilario

Interesting, eh? Kobe would put some fire into the Nuggets’ game plan on both ends of the floor. And, with Marcus Camby and the return of Kenyon Martin, Nene is expendable. For the Lakers, the swap also makes sense on every level.

Another deal that would probably require more courage, and more creative thinking, than the bigwigs of either franchise are capable of showing.

With Lamar Odom to Indiana for Jermaine O’Neal

This would be a lateral move for both teams and wouldn’t be sufficient to satisfy Kobe.

So, then, here’s the deal that makes the most sense:

Bryant to New York for Jamal Crawford, David Lee, Malik Rose and Eddy Curry

Add Kwame Brown (or even Bynum) and Radmanovic, and neither team has any legitimate reason for saying nay.

Benefit for the Knicks: Zeke gets to keep Zach Randolph, and New York would be agog over finally having a bona fide super-duper star to root for. And even Starbury would have to take a back seat to Kid Kobe.

The Knicks’ starting lineup would consist of Kobe, Marbury, Quentin Richardson, Randolph and Bynum/Brown. On the bench: Nate Robinson, Radmanovic, Renaldo Blackman, Fred Jones, Jared Jeffries, Jerome James and Randolph Morris.

Benefit for Lakers: Even when Crawford was in Chicago, Phil Jackson was always intrigued by his game. With the triangle providing enough of a framework, Crawford would conceivably tame his wildness and blossom into a dependable, all-star-caliber performer. Curry has plenty of flaws, but the young man can certainly score in the low-post — and he’s certainly young enough to learn how to play “real” basketball. Lee, of course, would energize the entire team, while Rose would bring a warrior’s mentality to set an example for whichever big man the Lakers would keep.

In one of the stranger storylines of the season, Virginia Tech had several uniforms stolen in their trip to play Georgia Tech last night.

The result? Several Hokies, including VaTech starting QB Sean Glennon (photo), were forced to wear old, borrowed Georgia Tech road uniforms (whites) in suiting up for the game. VaTech players had to use tape and Sharpies to cross out the “Yellow Jackets” across the front of the uniforms. Glennon’s name was hand-written on the back of his uniform.

“Branden (Ore) wrote it on there first in caps and lower case,” Glennon said. “I then did it in all caps.”

In the end, the uniforms didn’t matter - the Hokies (and several psuedo Yellow Jackets) downed Georgia Tech by a final score of 27-3.

Just an observation… Glennon’s 22 for 36 performance (296 yards) with 2 touchdowns was one of the best performances by anybody in a Georgia Tech uniform all year.

This weekend a battle will commence at 12.45 GMT in North London between two of the nations oldest rivals. Arsenal, one of the most successful clubs in the Premier League’s history, will lock horns with the most successful club in the Premier League’s history – Manchester United.

In what is always a mouth watering fixture to every season, the league table as it stands couldn’t be any closer. Arsenal sit on top with the same points and same goal difference as the Red Devils but with a game in hand. The result to this game could prove to be pivotal at the end of the season. Between them Man Utd have won 375 games, notched up 1,258 points and collected nine league titles. Arsenal on the other hand have won 316 games, notched up 1,107 points and gained three titles.

The game this season sets up the most effective attack against the tightest defence; the north Londoners have scored 22 goals in 10 whilst their rivals have conceded just 4 in 11. Last seasons match at the Emirates saw Arsenal come from behind to beat Man Utd 2-1 in the last seven minutes of the game. Rooney had put the away side in front but an equaliser from Van Persie, who broke his foot in doing so, and a winner from the now departed Henry stole the points for them.

Interesting facts to note going into the lunch time game this weekend is Arsenal have never lost when Emmanuel Adebayor has scored. They’ve won 16 and drawn twice in the 18 matches that he’s found the back of the net. However, the Togolese striker hasn’t scored since the 22nd September when he netted twice in the 5-0 victory against Derby. Wayne Rooney has scored five times against Arsenal, twice when he was at Everton and three times for United. This season the strike force of Rooney and Tevez are the Premier League’s top marksmen with four goals each.

The rivalry between the two over the years has been a bitter one, with incidents such as the infamous pizza throwing fight in October 2004. The game that led to that was a physical encounter in which United ended Arsenal’s 49 game unbeaten run. The Londoner’s were said to be enraged with United’s tactics and the penalty that was awarded to Rooney. It was this row that escalated in the tunnel at the final whistle, where rumours circled that pizza was thrown around and Sir Alex Ferguson was hit in the face by a slice. In the prior season to this one though, another penalty decision was at the heart of the ‘disagreement’ between the two sides. Patrick Vieira was sent off with 10 minutes remaining after a foul on Van Nistelrooy. After the Dutchman failed to put away the resulting spot-kick several of Arsenal’s players surrounded him with accusations of cheating and goading him to the point where fines and match bans were issued out afterwards.

There’s no love lost between the managers either. Ferguson and Wenger face each other for the 34th time with 33 of the previous meetings resulting in 11 United wins and 13 to Arsenal. Seven of the other nine were draws with the remaining two being decided via penalty shoot-outs.

With Fabregas in exceptional form this season and 10 goals under his belt already his awareness, drive and stamina are crucial to his side’s chances this weekend. Arsenal have played attractive, one-touch football so far this term – something which they have been practicing in training using smaller set up pitches. They could miss Van Persie who is injured but with Eduardo netting twice in midweek this can only be a boost of confidence he needed. Arsenal, as much as the reliance on Fabregas, will also be looking to their wide players Hleb and Rosicky to use their skills and acute passing to get the dangerous, defence splitting through balls to their strikers.

United have played quick, counter attacking football this season and with the pace of Ronaldo, Rooney and Nani can cause any side problems. They will be dependent on their back four remaining as firm as ever and releasing the ball early to the attacking players. Scholes is out of the match but with the returns of Hargreaves, who can hold up the ball well and Gary Neville’s experience in defence they will be going into the game with confidence.

It’s ether going to be a high tempo, fast paced physical match with both sides looking to score early on to take control of the game or a nervy, keep-possession type game that will result in a draw if it does. United will no doubt be focusing on containing Fabregas whereas Arsenal’s defence and Almunia are going to have to be alert throughout the whole 90 minutes in monitoring United’s potent attack.

    My prediction: 2-1 Arsenal

Thusfar, there have been a half-dozen deaths and nearly as many critical injuries attributed to bungy jumping. As bungy jumping is a relatively new sport, this is a significant number, and should make clear for anyone considering bungy jumping that it is quite risky indeed. While how well the bunjy jumping equipment is maintained and overseen for its safety factors plays a large role in preventing deaths, there are a number of health risks associated with the sport itself.

Deaths and critical injuries generally occur as a result of improperly maintained equipment or miscalculations of cord length. A death from massive cranial trauma occurred in 1997, for example, from improperly handled cords. The victim was a female member of a professional bungy jumping team.

However, even with the most stringent safety precautions, it is not possible to eliminate risks of injury, especially those which are actually associated with the sport of bungy jumping. One of the most significant risks particular to women is that of uterine prolapse. It is said that the speed and pressure of the bungy jumping can cause the uterus to not only tip but, in some cases, slide out of its normal location and even out of the body itself. This, naturally, is very dangerous and potentially life-threatening.

Eye trauma is another very serious health risk from bungy jumping. One of the most dangerous types of eye trauma associated with this sport is retinal hemorrhage; this presents a very real possibility of losing one’s eyesight. Bungy jumping also presents the possibility of orbital emphysema, which can also result in permanent loss of vision. On a slightly-lesser scale, but still noteworthy, are basic injuries to the eyes and their surrounding tissues.

Other health risks vary in their severity. While such injuries as bruises and rope burn may be thought to be rather minor, dislocations and back injuries can range from moderate to disabling. One must decide if all of these potential risks are worth engaging in the sport of bungy jumping, especially since there is no sure way of calculating the individual’s chance of these results occurring. Even being in good general health beforehand is not a guarantee that the act of bungy jumping will not lead to any or all of these results.

If you have assessed your own personal health concerns and have decided to try bungy jumping anyway, it is essential that you do your bungy jumping on equipment which is frequently checked for and maintained for the optimum degree of safety. Next, you should ensure that those who handle the equipment before and during bungy jumping are adequately trained to do so properly. In addition, you should consider the factor that some bungy jumping groups allow newcomers to the sport to bungy jump alone, while others take the extra safety precaution of having a newcomer be accompanied by a trained jumper.

As with any adventurous sport, bungy jumping comes with many risks. It is impossible to eliminate all of these risks, regardless of how professional those in charge may be or how cautious the jumper may be. If you plan to become involved with bungy jumping, it is essential that you become aware of these risks.
