DENVER – For 86 years, winning a championship was impossible for the Boston Red Sox. Their failures became legendary. School kids knew about the Curse of the Bambino before they could count to 10.
Amidst the slightly mixed reviews received by Kauto Star, the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, after his gallant Aintree defeat by Monet’s Garden, for me two notices stood out.
Both can be filed as positives, and both came from people with interests that would be described as not just a bit, but extremely vested.
THE Boston Red Sox completed their second World Series championship sweep in four seasons today with Mike Lowell and Bobby Kielty smashing solo home runs in a 4-3 victory over Colorado.
After waiting 86 years between Red Sox crowns in Major League Baseball’s best-of-seven final, Boston’s devoted supporters suffered only a three-year gap between the drought-snapping 2004 sweep of St. Louis and this title romp.
FORMER Australia, NSW and Country five-eighth Laurie Daley has been appointed as coach of the NSW Country Origin rugby league team for its annual clash with City next year.
Daley will take over the position from Craig Bellamy, who was recently promoted to the NSW State of Origin coaching job.
Daley, who played 23 State of Origin matches for NSW during a stellar playing career and was the Blues assistant coach from 2002-06, said he was looking forward to the challenge of his first senior head coaching role.
Snowboarding has quickly become one of the most popular snow sports around. Like any other physical sport there is always a chance for injury. However if you take precautions and use protective gear you can protect yourself from serious injuries.
There are some injuries that are quite common in snowboarding and most involve the upper body. Sprains are very common. Fractures and contusions also occur. Injuries to the arm, wrist, elbow, and shoulder are common because when a snowboard wipes out he or she tends to fall either backwards or forwards and the first reflex is to extend your arms to stop the fall. This leads to injuries of the arms and shoulders. Falling backwards can also lead to head injuries, and any wipe out can lead to bruising.
Hockey is an extremely popular sport for individuals of all ages. In fact hockey is so popular that there are a number of different variations of hockey. Hockey is most commonly placed on the ice; however, hockey can be played as street hockey or inline roller hokey.
No matter which variation of the sport is being played hockey is a potentially dangerous sport. For this reason it is often recommended or even required that all hockey players wear protective gear while playing. Out of all of the players on the team there is one individual who needs that protection more than others. That player is known as the goalie.
QMJHL
Goalies Pier-Olivier Pelletier and Olivier Roy stole the show Sunday.
The netminders were excellent in a tight game as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles edged the Halifax Mooseheads 2-1 in a shootout that went 12 rounds.
But it was Roy who walked away with the win, making 33 saves for the Screaming Eagles victory, while Pelletier made 24 saves for the Mooseheads.
For a man who admits that he did not watch England’s efforts to retain the Webb Ellis Cup last Saturday, that he went to a family party instead, that he cannot be bothered to see the video and that, by and large, he was left disappointed by the tournament, Dean Ryan is taking a great deal of hope from the World Cup.
NEW YORK — While Boston College gained some cushion on third-place LSU in the Bowl Championship Series standings and Ohio State held firm to first place, Arizona State moved into position to make a big stretch run.
The unbeaten Sun Devils raised their BCS average to .849 after beating California 31-20 on Saturday. Arizona State, with its most challenging games still to play, might not need teams ahead of it to lose to move up the standings.
