Drogba: Centre of attention
Chelsea’s stars are starting to build up a head of steam, after all the off-field controversy.
Boss Avram Grant has managed four wins out of six since taking over from Jose Mourinho after the opening round draw with Norwegian minnows Rosenborg.
Didier Drogba scored a superb winner as The Blues beat Group B’s form team Valencia 2-1 away last time out.
Since then the Ivorian international has moved to reassure the Chelsea faithful of his commitment to the club, though news of his ongoing relationship with his former manager is a slight worry for the future.
Form
Solid Premier League wins away against Bolton Wanderers and Middlesbrough have lifted spirits though, and the West Londoners are looking to keep up their recent improvement.
Captain John Terry and left-back Ashley Cole are still out following their injuries sustained on international duty with England.
And their German opponents have a good record away from home this season.
Defence
Schalke sit fifth in the Bundesliga and remain unbeaten away from home in the league in the current campaign.
Victory at Rosenborg last time out has boosted their chances of qualification after the opening day defeat at home to Valencia.
But coach Mirko Slomka will have to do without influential German international Christian Pander for Wednesday night.
Defender Mladen Krstajic is back in contention though as Schalke look to take advantage of a group that is currently wide open.
