Hiddink: Not interested by England
Guus Hiddink has insisted he never seriously considered becoming England coach.
The Football Association admitted last month they had contacted Hiddink about the possibility of replacing Sven Goran Eriksson after last year’s World Cup.
The FA were quick to stress that Hiddink had never been formally offered the position, and it seems that even if they had, the answer would have been no.
Hiddink claims he had already made a verbal agreement with Russian chiefs and was not tempted by England.
“There was a slight approach but at that moment I was already talking with the Russian federation,” he told Sky Sports News.
“I gave my word to Russia that I wouldn’t sign a contract (with anyone else) and I don’t go back on my word.”
No advantage
Hiddink’s Russia side take on England in a crucial Euro 2008 qualifier on Wednesday, but he has played down talk about the artificial surface at Luzhniki Stadium.
Hiddink does not believe Russia will have a significant edge, despite having trained on the pitch in the past.
He explained: “We’ve practised a few times on this pitch but England have practised also so the advantage is not huge.
“The bounce might be a bit higher but there won’t be much difference.”
