John Tavares
John Tavares is the league’s current top goal-scorer and if his performance Sunday is any indication he’ll likely be atop the standings for a long time.
Tavares registered his first hat trick of the season and also had two assists for a five-point night as the Oshawa Generals beat the Kingston Frontenacs 8-2 in OHL action.
Tavares scored once on the power play, once short-handed and once at even strength, upping his league leading totals to 13 goals and 22 points in eight games.
Linemate Brett MacLean also had five points, including a pair of goals, while Dean Howard contributed a goal and three assists.
Shea Kewin and James DeLory scored the other Oshawa goals, while Matthew Kang and Cory Emmerton replied for Kingston.
Elsewhere Sunday, it was: Niagara 6, Guelph 5 (OT); Knights 8, 67′s 2; Brampton 3, Belleville 2 (SO); Petes 3, Majors 2; and Greyhounds 4, Whalers 2.
At Oshawa, Ont., the Generals outshot the Frontenacs 40-30 and dealt Anthony Peters a defeat in his return to Oshawa following a recent trade. Jakub Kovar was in net for Oshawa (5-2-0-1).
Oshawa scored four times on eight power-play chances. Kingston (2-7-0-1) was one-of-nine with the man advantage.
Niagara 6, Guelph 5 (OT)
At St. Catharines, Ont., Alex Pietrangelo’s power-play goal 1:39 into overtime lifted the Niagara IceDogs (8-2-0-0) over the Guelph Storm (4-4-1-0).
Knights 8, 67′s 2
At London, Ont., Patrick Maroon registered a hat trick and added two assists as the Knights (2-6-0-0) pounded the Ottawa 67′s (5-3-0-2).
Brampton 3, Belleville 2 (SO)
At Brampton, Ont., Bobby Sanguinetti scored the shootout winner as the Battalion (5-3-0-1) rallied to defeat the Belleville Bulls (6-1-0-1).
Petes 3, Majors 2
At Mississauga, Ont., Zach Harden scored with 32 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Peterborough Petes (5-2-0-1) over the Majors (3-3-1-0).
Greyhounds 4, Whalers 2
At Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Brandon MacLean’s third-period tiebreaking goal lifted the Greyhounds (10-0-1-0) over Plymouth (4-3-0-1).
