NORMAN, Okla. – Using 22 hits to score 23 runs, the Oklahoma softball team added another fall win Thursday night as it topped Northern Oklahoma College, 23-0, at the OU Softball Complex. The 12-inning contest was split in half with a break in between the sixth and seventh frames.
Defensively, the pitching staff was solid as it recorded the shutout. Senior Jadyn Smith threw the first six innings for the Sooners as she held Northern scoreless while only giving up one hit and striking out three. Morgan Hudsonpillar pitched innings seven through nine and only surrendered one hit while striking out four. Lefty D.J. Mathis finished off the game as she struck out seven in the final three innings and allowed only two hits.
The Sooner offense was steady as Amber Flores led the offense with six RBI on a 4-for-8 performance. The sophomore tallied two doubles and a home run. Susan Ogden was also stellar with her four RBI, which included a three-run homer. Every Sooner that saw at least two at bats recorded a hit in the 12-inning contest.
The OU offense wasted no time getting on the board as Samantha Ricketts’ RBI groundout scored the first run of the game. Ogden followed with an RBI single to push the OU lead to 2-0 in the first inning.
Chana’e Jones RBI single to right field brought Dani Dobbs across the plate in the second frame for OU’s third run of the game. Flores’ opposite field RBI added another run in the second.
The Sooners poured it on in the third as two Northern errors and back-to-back singles by Wendy Trott and Jessica Legendre scored another run. Jones added her second RBI single of the game and Flores’ two RBI double plated two more runs. Ricketts’ RBI double off the center field wall scored Flores as OU led 9-0 after three complete innings.
The Sooners were held scoreless in the final three innings before the 10-minute break to start frames 7-12.
It was Flores again in the bottom of the seventh with her two run homer over the right field wall that extended the Sooner lead to 11-0. A Northern catcher error in the eighth brought another run across the plate and Jeannie Douglas followed that with an RBI single to center as OU led 13-0. Northern’s centerfielder dropped a fly ball in the frame as OU added another run. Iver McDonald followed with an RBI groundout to score Dobbs, who reached on a single. Another costly Northern error brought another run across the plate as OU led 16-0. However, a wild pitch by the Northern pitcher scored Flores to add another run to the column for the Sooners.
Ogden added to OU’s offense in the bottom of the 10th with her three-run homer over the left field wall as OU led 20-0.
Krystle Huey added a two-out double down the right field line in the bottom of the 11th to score Haley Anderson and extend the lead to 21-0. McDonald continued the rally with an RBI double to center field. The Sooners didn’t let up as Flores knocked an RBI double to center as OU led 23-0.
The Sooners will close out their fall season next Wednesday, Oct. 17. Oklahoma will host Connors State College at 5 p.m. inside the OU Softball Complex.
The fall season does not count towards the squad’s 2008 spring record, but is an opportunity for the players to compete against other competition as well as for the fans to catch an early glimpse of the team.
