Apparently, the fact that Eric “Mighty Mouse” Aiken resigned with Banner Promotions has paid immediate dividends. The Forestville, MD resident will challenge Thomas “The Rock” Mashaba of South Africa for Mashaba’s International Boxing Organization Featherweight title on Monday, November 12 at Emperor’s Palace Casino in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Aiken (16-5-1, 12 KO’s) has not fought since his March 16 draw against Cruz Carvajal in Salem, NH. Aiken faces a formidable foe in Mashaba (19-2-4, 11 KO’s), who is making the fifth defense of his IBO title that he took from former IBF Super Bantamweight champion Vuyani Bungu in June of 2005. However, Mashaba has not fought since December 15, 2006 when he scored a third round knockout over Oscar Leon in Western Cape, South Africa.

Sports Illustrated’s Frank Deford is wrong: NHL belongs at Olympics
I can only imagine that after Frank Deford completed his latest piece for Sports Illustrated’s web site, he lit a big cigar, leaped into his Hummer, fired up an American Idol CD, and zoomed off to his favorite steakhouse for a 64-ounce prime rib.

The veteran columnist’s argument that the NHL and NBA should both withdraw from the Olympics (after 2010 and 2008 respectively) is both patronizing and parochial, and speaks to an overblown sense of navel-gazing North American entitlement.

Rockies, Diamondbacks Open NLCS Thursday, The ALCS Opens Friday

The National League championship series opens on Thursday as two mid-west teams, the Colorado Rockies and the Arizona Diamondbacks duke-it-out with the NL pennant on the line.

Unlike in recent past seasons, where the NLCS pitted big money teams like the Mets, or Atlanta Braves, the St. Louis Cardinals, or the Dodgers or  Padres against each other, this season two so-called small-market teams clash.

SMQ has a great analysis of the Southern Cal run over the past five years compared to the legendary championship runs of Nebraska, Florida State and Miami.

When you break down the numbers, a surprising trend starts to appear that would seem to indicate that the USC Trojan dynasty may be coming to an end.

SMQ shows us that Miami’s 2000 season nearly mirrors USC’s 2003 season: only one loss, won a huge BCS game, and finished the season ranked #2 (OK, so the Trojans finished split 1 & 2).
