Junior center earns honor for second consecutive season

IRVING, Texas – For the second straight season, Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris was named the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year in a vote by the league’s head coaches announced by the conference office Wednesday.
Paris has been the face of Big 12 women’s basketball in her two years as a collegian. The 2007 Associated Press National Player of the Year is the only player in NCAA history to collect 700 points, 500 rebounds and 100 blocks in a single-season – a feat Paris has accomplished twice.

ZURICH, Switzerland – Brazil playmaker Kaka and Argentina forward Lionel Messi are among the leading contenders to challenge Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro for this year’s FIFA World Player of the Year award.
Cannavaro, who last year became the first defender to earn the honour, will also face competition from two-time winner Ronaldinho of Brazil and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba, who are among 30 players nominated for the award Wednesday.

The LA Times is reporting that a “sports marketer” who made payments to Reggie Bush and his family has agreed to cooperate with an NCAA investigation into the matter.
Lloyd Lake will “provide documentation of financial transactions” made to Bush and his family while the Heisman Trophy winner was a member of the USC Trojans football team.
Lake and his business partner Michael Michaels first came to national attention in April 2006 when Michaels told the San Diego Union-Tribune that the Bush’s family never paid rent on the home they lived in while Bush played at Southern Cal.
