The Straight Dope on Doping in the NHL: Part One
Being the best of the best as an elite athlete is something that kids dream of. Fame, fortune, and respect normally go hand in hand with being, say, the holder of baseball’s single-season home run record, the 2004 Olympic 100-meter sprint champion, or the 2006 Tour de France winner.

Unfortunately, Barry Bonds, Justin Gatlin, and Floyd Landis have had their accomplishments tarnished by the specter of performance-enhancing drugs. The involvement of Bonds with the infamous Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO) and his alleged use of anabolic steroids calls into question the validity of the San Francisco Giants slugger’s surpassing of Hank Aaron’s career home run record. Caught with excessive testosterone levels, Gatlin was stripped of the 9.77-second world record he set in May 2006 and received an eight-year ban from sprinting. Landis, meanwhile, gave numerous excuses for why synthetic testosterone might have been detected in his urine sample before losing his crown in a cycling event that has become notoriously drug-riddled.

TORONTO (AP) — Maple Leafs forward Jason Blake has a rare form of leukemia that he said leaves him in no immediate danger and is highly treatable.

The 34-year-old left wing has started treatment and doesn’t expect to miss any playing time.

“When you find out that you have something it’s definitely shattering to your whole family and so on,” Blake said after practice. “Overall, I feel good. I’m still here and my goal this whole season hasn’t changed.”

ROME (AP) — The NBA is staging another successful preseason tour in Europe. Regular-season games on the continent are the next step.

“I think that time is coming closer,” NBA commissioner David Stern said Sunday at halftime of the Toronto Raptors win over Virtus Lottomatica Roma. “That has historically been a matter of euros. It costs many euros to buy a game from a regular season because our teams do so well.

“But with the new O2 Arena in London, with the new arena in Berlin, with the proposed arena in Rome, Europe is beginning to develop buildings that look much like the ones that we have in the United States, and those buildings will yield more revenue for such a game.”
