Bentley: No regrets
David Bentley has defended his decision to pull out of the European Under 21 Championship in the summer.
The Blackburn winger opted not to join up with the rest of Stuart Pearce’s squad in Holland so he could concentrate on getting fit for the start of the new Premier League campaign.
He scored his fourth goal of the season in Blackburn’s 2-1 victory over Birmingham and believes he was right not to play for the Under 21s.
Bentley’s impressive performances early in the season saw him called up for his senior England debut against Israel.
The 23-year-old was booed by a section of the Wembley crowd but is now keen to put the matter behind him and move on.
“I am feeling fit. That is what you want at this stage of the season – to be fresh and fit,” Bentley told The Sun.
“The decision I made is history. I believed it would be right and the only proof was going to be how I performed on the pitch.
“By making that decision I wanted to make sure I was in the best possible condition to play in the Premiership or the highest level.”
