Vienna, Austria (Sports Network) – Second-seeded Fernando Gonzalez survived a scare to advance on the opening day of the BA-CA Tennis Trophy Sunday.

The Chilean star dropped his first set against Italian Filippo Volandri but weathered things and bounced back strongly in the final two sets to take a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at Wiener Stadthalle.

The only other first round match scheduled saw Dutchman Robin Haase outlast Italian Agustin Calleri, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Top seed Novak Djokovic gets underway on Monday when he faces American Robby Ginepri. Meanwhile, third-seed Ivan Ljubicic, who is the two-time defending champion here, will take on Andreas Haider-Maurer in the first round.

Ljubicic defeated Gonzalez in last year’s final.
